India brides get wooden paddles to beat drunk husbands

India brides get wooden paddles to beat drunk husbands
An Indian state minister has given hundreds of wooden bats to newly-wed brides, urging them to use the paddle as a weapon if their husbands turn alcoholic or abusive.Gopal Bhargava gave the bats — which are used to get dirt out of clothes in traditional laundries — to nearly 700 brides at a mass wedding organised by the government of central Madhya Pradesh state on Saturday.

The nearly foot-long paddles are emblazoned with messages that read: “For beating drunkards” and “Police won’t intervene”.

Bhargava told the brides to reason with their husbands first, adding that they should “let the wooden paddles do the talking” if their spouses refuse to listen.

Bhargava told AFP he wanted to draw attention to the plight of rural women who face domestic abuse from their alcoholic husbands.

“Women say whenever their husbands get drunk they become violent. Their savings are taken away and splurged on liquor,” he said.

“There is no intent to provoke women or instigate them to violence but the bat is to prevent violence.”

An obese monkey in Bangkok, Thailand has been checked into the primate equivalent of boot camp to help him lose some weight. The 20-year-old long-tailed macaque named "Uncle Fatty" has become quite popular among tourists in Bang Thian district, who have been feeding him everything from melons to milkshakes to noodles day in and day out.

After seeing the pictures posted online, primate conservation group Monkey Lovers, went last Thursday to check on the big eater's health. He likes eating and there are lots of visitors who give him food all day," said the group's Kawinoat Mongkholtechaphat, adding that the monkey might not survive if he continues eating like that.

To avoid this, the Tha Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation has now transferred him him to a wildlife rescue centre, where he will soon start a program including running sessions with other animals and a lighter diet to hopefully cut his weight by half and allow him to roam in more comfort again.

Breaking: 400 Fulani across Nigeria convert to Christianity

Breaking: 400 Fulani across Nigeria convert to Christianity
Not less than 400 Fulani Christian converts have been tasked on preaching the gospel of peace to their kindred in order to reduce the prevailing crises in the country.

Rev. Copper Sebok, Reverend in charge of COCIN Church Panyam, gave the charge on Sunday at the end of a 3-day conference organised for all Fulani converts of all denominations across the country.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the conference was aimed at awakening the need for preaching peace to their fellow brothers and sisters across the country.

“The conference is also a re-union service for all Fulani converts regardless of their denominations and to share experiences and encourage one another in the propagation of the gospel of peace.

“It is a concept of COCIN 43 years ago, and to debunk the notion that Fulani’s are nomadic and can’t be reached with the gospel of Christ.’’

In his sermon, read from Matt 9: 35-38, the clergy said man must have compassion on the unsaved to draw them to Christ for eternal salvation.

He decried the level of crises in Nigeria which usually resulted to loss of lives and property, adding that Nigerians must embrace peace for the progress and development of the nation.

Rev. Hassan Mohammed, who spoke on behalf of the converts, expressed gratitude to God for giving them a new lease of life as Christians. He disclosed that the conference was an eye opener for them to go and proclaim the gospel not only to their kindred but to all nations.

“We have a total of seven Fulani people ordained Reverends beside other Pastors and Evangelists and we are doing our best to enlighten our brothers and sisters about Christianity,’’ Mohammed said. He thanked the organizers of the conference and appealed to both Christians and Muslim to continue to pray for the peace of the country.

'Biafra is for the Igbo....I am a Biafran', says Iwuanyanwu

'Biafra is for the Igbo....I am a Biafran', says Iwuanyanwu
Against the background of prosecution of the leaders of Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, publisher of Champion newspapers, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu has said that he belongs to Biafra and that he remains a Biafran as an Igboman.

Iwuanyanwu who was reacting to the recent release of Kanu from prison detention said was wrong, in the first place, to level treason charges against Kanu, noting that what Kanu has been doing mere expression of public opinion, which he said is no act of offence let along an act of treason.

The former Presidential candidate made the statements at Amokwe in Udi local government area of Enugu state when he paid condolence visit to the family of late political scientist, Prof. Godwin Odenigwe. He noted that Odenigwe would be remembered for bringing about traditional rulers stool in communities of Igboland and for pioneering the creation of the local government system as third tier of government.

On Nnamadi kanu and Biafra agitation, Iwuanyanwu said: “I have always said that was no reason detaining Nnamdi Kanu. In the law of this country which I know unless you have arms. Nnamdi Kanu didn’t commit any treason. Treason is when you take up arms against the government, he didn’t take up any arms, there was no reason whatsoever for detaining him, because everybody have the right to say I want Biafra, everybody have the right to say I want Biafra. For God’s sake, I’ve made it clear to people that Biafra is for the Igbo. Hausas are Arewas, Yorubas are Oduduwas and we are Biafrans.

“There is a problem we have because Biafra fought a war and people are ashamed to say they are Biafrans but I am not afraid to say I am a Biafran. Biafra is part of Nigeria, Arewa is part of Nigeria, Oduduwa is part of Nigeria; all of us are there. “If a person from Odududuwa takes up arms to secede from Nigeria, its treason but if one is just saying by words of mouth, it just an ordinary expression of public opinion. There is no law that makes such a person get convicted by just saying we want to secede, it’s a right of expression.

“But if somebody from Oduduwa is amassing arms to topple the government to secede, its treason. If somebody from Arewa is amassing arms to topple the government, its treason, if somebody from Biafra, because all of us are from Biafra I am from Biafra, to topple government, its treason.

“But if I come and say I want Biafra, it’s no offence. To the best of my knowledge Kanu didn’t have any violent means; all he said was that he wanted Biafra. He shouldn’t have been detained in the first place, I said it long ago. I said the government is making him a hero but people misquoted me and said I said government should jail him.

“No, I said that getting an innocent person, putting him in prison, they are making him a hero. So what Nnamdi Kanu is now is a hero because of all these. So he has not committed any offence and shouldn’t have been in detention in the first place.

“But there are also some parts of Igbo, who since after the war, they don’t want to talk about Biafra. You cannot wish away Biafra, Biafra is there just like you can’t wish away Oduduwa or Arewa.

President Buhari will probably win 2019 election, says Kachikwu

President Buhari will probably win 2019 election, says Kachikwu
Minister of petroleum resources Ibeh Kachikwu, says President Muhammadu Buhari will probably win the 2019 presidential election.

The Minister said this while responding to a question from CNN anchor, Richard Quest, who has been in Nigeria.

Speaking on the diversification of Nigeria’s economy, the minister said the effort of the government in this regard was realistic, and that results would be evident in the next five or seven years.

“It is realistic. Five or seven years. Petroleum led us into this problem; it has to lead us out,” he said in response to a question from Quest.

On how far the current reforms in the petroleum sector are at the moment, Kachikwu said, “about 50 percent”.

Quest asked: “Is it likely, because within another year your president or the party will be fighting in an election, and pretty much you are already in an election mode?”, and Kachikwu responded: “Those of us in government are focused on getting work done; the president is probably going to win the election anyway.”

Barbra Streisand Slams ‘Sexist’ Hollywood at Tribeca Film Festival

Barbra Streisand Slams ‘Sexist’ Hollywood at Tribeca Film Festival
You know you’re in trouble when one of the biggest divas to ever hit the big time has something to say, and Barbra Streisand has hit out at the ‘lack of female directors’ in film. Chatting with Robert Rodigurez, she explained that in the history of the Oscars, only 4 women have been nominated for Best Director, and only one actually won. So there actually could be some truth in her belief that Hollywood is still quite sexist.

Telling Robert that the bad reviews of the films she did direct must have hurt her more than she though because she took an 8 year break away from the directing side of things and focussed more on her music.

During the Q&A session, Robert also admitted that although a strange combination given his work on films like Sin City, he and his mother are both super-fans and he really wanted to interview one of his idols.

However, it does raise an honest question about film. Is the industry so biased towards men that women seldom get a sniff at the technical awards, such as directing, composition and special effects? We certainly believe that there could be something to it, especially when some pretty poor films have walked away with best Director awards while female directors never get a look in even though their direction was far superior to that of their male counterparts.

Barbra often does get a bee in her bonnet, be it sexism, racism, and anti Semitism, and she regularly speaks out of her support for her gay fan base which is on a par with the likes of Cher, Kylie, Madonna and Lady Gaga. She is a believer in all things being right and fair, regardless of whom you are, and this is only the latest incident of her speaking out about inequality.

She addressed a LGBT conference in 2004 to deliver a powerful Pro Same Sex Marriage, Anti Bush speech where she is on record saying how the introduction of a now failed amendment would legally allow for discrimination, even going so far as to hint at the 1950’s where it was common to have separate entrances for white people and black people.

We do believe that Streisand does stand by these principals in her personal life, however, we still have to question if there was not an ulterior motive behind the interview, namely a kick start to her career to get herself back into the lime light and to start working again in film as oppose to just music.

The 75 year old who has only directed 3 films in her career achieved moderate success with her films with 14 Oscar nominations, however, none of them were actually for best director.

She said ‘There are a lot of older people. They don’t want to see a woman director’ She also added ‘I didn’t know how many women want to see a woman director. Here’s hoping that if she does direct again, she has better luck.

Mercy Aigbe looking fresh after suffering domestic violence

The attack on Mercy Aigbe by her husband took place on Easter Sunday, so she has had time to heal. And according to new reports, Lagos state government might prosecute the actress' husband, Lanre Gentry, after she dragged him to the Lagos Ministry of Women Affairs for the alleged battery. The state agency responsible for domestic violence has begun investigation into the matter...

“The case is with us. It was reported here by the victim herself, and because of the governor’s zero tolerance for domestic violence, we are as a matter of urgency investigating the whole drama. It is a good thing that it has also been brought to the public eye. We’re still very much on top of the matter and we’ll get it to its logical conclusion,” a top official at the agency said

Mr. President is strong enough to run for a second term - Minister
Rotimi Amaechi, the minister of transport and former Rivers state governor,  says President Buhari is healthy enough to run for a second term in office come 2019. Amaechi said this while responding to questions in a recent interview with Channels TV.

“If you look at the president since he came to the country, you will see there is a huge improvement. He’s regaining his weight.

This is a 74-year old man, he is no longer a 58 years old man. He is not 50. He is not a young man. I will advise that he should. The president is fit enough to govern and if he makes the decision to run again, if he does, I don't think there is anything wrong in supporting him"he said

'Nigerian made speed limiter 'superior' than imported ones’ – Minister

'Nigerian made speed limiter 'superior' than imported ones’ – Minister
The speed limiting device being manufactured in Nigeria is better and cheaper than the imported ones, the Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, has said.

Onu, who spoke with the Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in New York, said that made-in-Nigeria device was a research product where Nigerians in Diaspora could make legitimate money.

The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) began the enforcement of the installation of the device in commercial vehicles in February.

“Our Road Safety Corps has mandated all our commercial vehicles to deploy speed limiting devices and we import this; each one costs an average of N40,000.

“So, for just one million vehicles, we are looking at N40 billion, that’s the business.

“But ultimately, this enforcement will go round, so if you have 10 million to 20 million vehicles, you can imagine looking at almost N800 billion businesses.

“One of our agencies, Sheda Science and Technology Complex (SHESTCO), brought the device to me; it is better than the best that is being brought into the country.

“And I still asked them to go and work and get it to be cheaper and better,” he said.

Onu, however, said that the Federal Government wanted Nigerian investors, particularly those in the Diaspora, to now take the research product and commercialise it.

“Now, we need people like you to come and commercialise it and make the money. This is the message.

“We have taken the risk off you; we have done the research and we have the product, then you come, we will give it to you.

“I will prefer as a minister to give it to a Nigerian than to give it to a multinational corporation, I will prefer to do so.

“Because all the money will remain in Nigeria and the President is very determined, he wants to make sure that all persons, all Nigerians who want to work can work.

“There’s no other way we are going to create these jobs unless we commercialise our research findings,” he said.

The minister regretted pressure on the Naira, saying the currency had been fallen because the country depended too much on imported commodities.

“We now depend on importing everything into the country, including toothpicks. So the pressure on the currency is too much,” he said.

Acknowledging the efforts of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to defend the Naira, Onu said “Nigeria must start producing at home” adding that there was no shortcut to stronger Naira but local production.

OUTRAGEOUS! Bayelsa government owing teachers 10 months salaries

Bayelsa State Government owing teachers 10 months salaries
School teachers in the service of  oil rich Bayelsa state have not been paid salaries for 10 months and have resolved to embark on an industrial action.

The state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), on Sunday threatened to commence a three-day warning strike from May 2, over unpaid nine-and-a-half months salary backlog.

The NUT, in a communique signed by its Chairman, Mr Kala-Ama Tonpre and Secretary, Mr Johnson Hector, said the union took the decision after its Executive Council meeting held on Saturday in Yenagoa.

NUT in Bayelsa had embarked on a strike which shut public schools in Bayelsa for six weeks at the beginning of the 2016/2017 academic session in September 2016 over unpaid salaries.

The union said it also resolved that the state government should urgently pay the salaries it owed primary school teachers to bring them at par with other civil servants in the state.

The NUT also called on the government to take over the funding and management of primary education without attaching conditions to it.

The union further asked the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and the Post Primary Schools Board to implement the 2013 and 2015 promotions and to conduct the 2016 exercise without delay.

It appealed to the government to involve other banks in the payment of secondary school teachers’ salaries instead of giving the mandate to only the Sterling Bank.

The union also urged the government to take care of the cost of bank transaction to reduce excess deductions on its members’ accounts.

NUT implored the government to fill vacancies created by retired and deceased teachers by employing qualified personnel and government should also begin the payment of N18, 000 minimum wage arrears to teachers.

Pope Francis urges international mediation on North Korea crisis

Pope urges international mediation on North Korea crisis
Pope Francis has called for international mediation to ease rising tensions between the US and North Korea over Pyongyang's nuclear activity.

The pontiff suggested that Norway, for example, was "always ready to help".

He warned the crisis risked sparking a devastating war in which "a good part of humanity" would be destroyed.

His comments came hours after North Korea test-fired another ballistic missile, which the US and South Korea say exploded shortly after take-off.

The missile was fired from a site in South Pyeongan province, north of Pyongyang, South Korea said.

US President Donald Trump accused Pyongyang of showing "disrespect" towards China and its president.

Mr Trump recently hosted Chinese President Xi Jinping and praised him for "trying very hard" on North Korea.

The test came just hours after the UN Security Council had discussed North Korea's missile programme.

Speaking to reporters aboard his plane after a visit to Egypt, Pope Francis said: "There are so many facilitators in the world, there are mediators who offer themselves, such as Norway for example."

He warned that the situation had become "too hot" and said the "path is the path of negotiations, of a diplomatic solution".

The United Nations, he said, had become "too watered down".

Legendary climber dies on Everest

Legendary climber dies on Everest
The Swiss climber Ueli Steck has been killed on Mount Everest, Nepal's tourist office says.

Steck, who was known as the "Swiss Machine", died in an accident while acclimatising for an attempt on the mountain, without oxygen, by a new route.

The 40-year-old had won multiple awards and was known for his rapid ascents.

His body has been recovered from the mountain and flown to Kathmandu by helicopter.

On Wednesday Steck wrote on his Facebook page that he had a "quick day from Basecamp up to 7,000m and back" as he believed "active acclimatisation" was the most effective way of getting used to high altitude.

The climber reached Mount Everest's summit without oxygen in 2012, and in 2015 climbed all 82 Alpine peaks over 4,000m (13,100ft) in 62 days.

Steck had returned to the world's tallest mountain four years on from an altercation with sherpas which caused him to abandon an attempt to climb

British mountaineer Kenton Cool paid tribute to Steck, describing him as "a true inspiration" who "showed us all what was possible in the mountains and beyond".

The British Mountaineering Council described him as a "legendary mountaineer and all-round great guy".

Ueli Steck set new standards in alpine climbing - setting a string of records for making breathtakingly quick solo ascents of classic routes.

He also played a big part in bringing the sport to a new audience through the epic films made of his exploits.

He was nicknamed the "Swiss Machine" for his ruthlessly methodical approach and his ability to keep going even after pushing himself to the limits of human endurance.

In 2015 he climbed one of the world's most famous walls, the North Face of the Eiger, in two hours 47 minutes - a time that would have been unthinkable to the early pioneers of the sport, who took days to complete it.

Sharia court upholds illegal marriage of a Muslim tailor & his 16-yr-old Christian apprentice in Niger

Parents of a Christian 16-year-old girl are crying out for help following the decision of a Sharia court sitting in Erena to forcefully marry their daughter Janet Habila, to her Muslim tailor boss, Nasiru. According to Sun News, this happened in Erena district of Shiroro Local Government Area, Niger State. (above is a picture of the girl's mother)

Sharia court upholds illegal marriage of a Muslim tailor & his 16-yr-old Christian apprentice in Niger
Janet was an apprentice in Nasiru’s tailoring institute in Erena, where her father, devoted church leader with the United Mountain of Grace in Shundna village, had enrolled her in 2016 to learn the trade after she refused to further her education beyond primary school.

Janet until recently was the leader of the Sabo Rayi (new life) group in the church. Her parents as a way of empowering her, enrolled her to learn the tailoring trade but were shocked to receive a notification of her marriage through a Sharia court in Erena. Nasiru, a Nigerien national who settled in Erena, was said to have approached the court to join him and Janet as husband and wife without seeking the consent and approval of the parents.

"According to a source close to the family of the girl, Nasiru was said to have craftily organized some Muslim men and women in the area to stand as the parents of Janet in court to enable the marriage to take place.

"Habila Gambo, Janet’s father told Sunday Sun that unless the decision by the Sharia court, presided over by Umar Shehu to forcefully marry his daughter out to her Muslim boss without his consent was reversed, “it will eventually lead to a possible religious crisis in Erena.” Gambo warned that even if such illegality had happened elsewhere and they get away with it, “Erena and its environs would be thrown into confusion and possible anarchy by the practice of forced conversion and marriage.

Narrating what happened further Gambo said: “To my surprise, on March 16, 2017, I came back home and met a court summon, asking me to report at the Sharia Court, Erena. On getting to the court, I was told that my daughter had converted to Islam and that her marriage had been fixed for 2:00pm that same day. I told the Sharia court judge that as a father of Janet, I was not aware of such arrangement because my daughter never discussed anything like that with me. Therefore, I was not going to accept it and I would not be part of it.

“But to my surprise the judge told me that the court only wanted to inform me and that was all. He said that the marriage would go on as planned even without my consent. My daughter had never told me that she wanted to convert to Islam not to talk of marrying a Muslim, I paid a lot of money to train her and I would not allow this to happen while I am alive.”

Gambo reported the matter to the Niger State Police Command through a formal letter, urging the police to intervene and rescue his daughter from what he called an “unlawful marriage”. Following his complaint, the police promptly arrested Nasiru and detained him at the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Minna. Janet who was as asked to narrate what transpired, Janet told the police that she could not recall what actually happened but that she discovered that she was taking every instruction from Nasiru.

“I was confused, I didn’t know what happened, but I was taking every instruction from him (Nasiru). I was afraid to let my parents know because of the consequences and I was equally afraid to turn down Nasiru’s love advances even though inside me I didn’t like the idea.”

After taking her statement, Janet was handed over to the parents and were asked to return to the police after five days while investigation into the matter continued. Shockingly, when they returned to the police headquarters, Janet demanded that she should be allowed to say something, which, according to her, had been bothering her since she was handed over to her parents. She declared that she was not returning home with her parents as she was ready to join her husband, Nasiru.

Her father broke down in tears and wept uncontrollably as he watched his daughter being handed over to Nasiru by the police because the court had earlier pronounced them husband and wife and it was only the same court that could dissolve the marriage. He has now promised to challenge them with the last drop of his blood blood, saying 'This will never happen in my life time. My daughter is not a stray animal, and even a stray animal has owner. Nobody can take my daughter from me for free without my consent.'

Janet's mother, Asabe Gambo was also assaulted by Nasiru's relations when she went to visit her daughte. Narrating the experience, Asabe said: “I only wanted see my daughter when the women in the house gathered and started beating me and calling me unbeliever who should not be welcome into the house. They told me that my daughter was now a Muslim and, therefore, did not need any unbeliever around her. They didn’t allow me to even sight my daughter with my eyes. I am seriously in pain, as a mother who carried her pregnancy for nine months,” she lamented. “I want God to take my life instead of experiencing this kind of situation as a mother. This is quite unfortunate, I don’t want to believe that this is happening to me.  My daughter’s sudden change of attitude is not ordinary. As a Christian, I strongly believe that God will surely pass his judgement over this unfortunate experience. My daughter will surely regain her senses and return back home.”

MUST READ: Reasons Why You Must Eat Banana

MUST READ: Reasons Why You Must Eat Banana
Banana is extremely healthy and delicious. Some people scarcely eat it while others consume several bunches at least once a week. Whatever your frequency of eating may be, it is time to ramp up your banana eating game. Jumia Travel and Jumia Mobile Week share reasons why you should be eating more bananas.

Aids digestion
Bananas contain a fair amount of dietary fibre that aids digestion. So, if you are not meeting the daily fibre requirements of your body, Banana is the perfect fruit to eat. You should eat one or two after a meal for better results.

Boost Energy
Banana is loaded with so many nutrients including vitamin C, carbohydrates, antioxidants and potassium. Each of these nutrients works together to protect and energise the body.  This is why quite a number of athletes eat Bananas.

Deal with muscle cramps
Do you have muscle cramps almost every day? It is because your body lacks potassium. So with bananas having a reasonable amount of potassium, you can deal with muscle cramps by consuming more of it.

Healthy heart
Potassium is one of the essential nutrients for keeping your heart in good condition. The potassium eases the flow of blood from the heart to other parts of your body.

Prevent heartburn and stomach ulcers
You are likely to have heartburn after consuming a spicy meal. You can prevent this by eating Bananas. It is the same for stomach ulcers.

Low-calorie snack
Calories are units of energy you get from the foods you eat. People on a very low-calorie diet will complain of fatigue, constipation, nausea, and diarrhoea while the result of high calorie is weight gain and higher body fat. So, to get the balance of both ends, you should eat more bananas. Banana has a calorie count of 110.

Improve sight
Banana contains vitamin A which is good for the eyes. It enhances vision and also helps you sleep better at night.

Strengthen your bones
Manganese is an important nutrient for building strong bones and the ultimate source of manganese is Banana.

Tennis legend, Ilie Nastase tenders apology for racist comments on Serena Williams
Romanian Tennis Legend, Ilie Nastase has tendered a public apology for his racist comments on Serena Williams and his outburst during a Fed Cup match that saw him suspended by the International Tennis Federation.

The apology comes days after the 70-year-old legend was suspended for speculating about the skin color of the baby, Serena Williams is expecting with her fiance, Alexis Ohanian, who is white.
On his second controversy, he threw shade at Britain’s Johanna Konta, who was reduced to tears during last weekend’s Fed Cup competition in Romania.

Tennis legend, Ilie Nastase tenders apology for racist comments on Serena Williams
Taking to his Facebook page on Friday, an apologetic Nastase, wrote:
'I was five when I first picked up a racket. Since then, tennis has been more than a sport or a profession for me. Tennis has been, and is, my life, and for tennis, I have sacrificed almost everything, personal or professional. Unfortunately, now, in my 70s, I have somehow managed to do something I have never wanted or even imagined: to feel tennis moving further away from me.
The last few days have been difficult for me. My words during the Fed Cup have rightfully caused controversy and upset the audience, the press and, most painfully for me, the tennis world. I will not attempt to defend my words, but I can assure you they only stemmed from my genuine desire to defend the Romanian team and Romanian tennis.

I am fully aware that nothing can truly excuse my statements – not the tension of a high-stakes game, not my traditionally irreverent attitude, not the unfortunate escalation of the situation. My life remains dedicated to tennis and its audiences, so please accept my apologies, for whatever they may be worth right now.

 TOPIC:The Cares of The World

TODAY: Sunday April 30, 2017

Scripture: And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word, And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful. Mark 4:18-19

Thought For The Day: It is possible to use money to serve God, but you cannot serve God and money.

One of the weapons of the devil to weaken a man’s faith in God is distractions. Satan would attempt to distract a man from his vision especially if he is focused on God.

There are many things that distract a person from following God. One of those things is the cares of this world. A life that is filled with the cares of the world is a life that is passionate for vanity and passionless for spirituality.

Note that, the cares of the world are the enemies of true spirituality. The pursuit for the latest fashions and fads of this life, the craving to belong and the struggle for the things that this world has to offer are the enemies of true spirituality. Our anchor Scripture talks about the cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches and the lust for other things.

Lust is an inordinate affection for that which we are not licensed to get. It is possible to use money to serve God, but you cannot serve God and money. It is possible to master the things of this world and it is possible to be mastered by the things of this world.

Beloved, be focused on God despite the distractions in the world.

Remember this: It is possible to use money to serve God, but you cannot serve God and money.

Refuse to have your passion and affection centred on the transient vanities of this life because everything we see will fade away someday.

Prayer: LORD, please deliver me from the distractions of the world. Let me glory in You alone. I receive the grace to serve You all the days of my life in Jesus’ Name.

Prophetic Parental Blessing:
I deploy the judgmental fire mantle of God on my life against every beast in human form after your life, your family and the destiny of this nation. I decree that the earth reject them, I mobilise the forces of nature to fight against them until they are wiped off the face of the earth. I prophesy peace to you, your family and this nation, in Jesus’ Name.

TOPIC: Double Portion

TODAY: Sunday April 30, 2017

BIBLE TEXT: Deuteronomy 21:10-17

KEY VERSE: "But he shall acknowledge the son of the hated for the firstborn, by giving him a double portion of all that he hath: for he is the beginning of his strength; the right of the firstborn is his" (Deuteronomy 21:17).

In every family, there are some special privileges and rights that every firstborn enjoys. It is generally referred to as birthright, which ascribes to the firstborn the privilege of inheritance. This could vary in form or size from one family to another. In some cases, it could be estates willed to the individuals while in others, it could be a little less than that. But whatever the case, it is expected that the recipient attach utmost importance to it. The first son in Israel had the birthright.

This was usually given in a double portion. God commands that whatever the father’s relationship with the mother, whatever scores there are to be settled between a man and his wife, the husband "...shall acknowledge the son of the hated for the firstborn, by giving him a double portion of all that he hath: for he is the beginning of his strength; the right of the firstborn is his" (Deuteronomy 21:17). There are blessings, promises and privileges attached to birthrights. Esau lost the Abrahamic blessings; Reuben, the blessing of lineage of Jesus Christ and Israel the privilege of undertaking special assignments for God which they ceded to the Levites.

As Christians and members of the family of God, we have birthrights – promises, privileges and rights. We must be watchful and vehemently resist every temptation to despise and give away our birthright. Because the Levites gave themselves unto the Lord, He also gave Himself unto them. In the New Testament dispensation, believers are partakers of the divine nature and holiness is part of the benefits, promises and privileges.

At salvation, we have peace with God when our sins are forgiven; at sanctification, we have the peace of God when the inclination to sin is removed and the adamic nature is purified and purged. The first part of the inheritance is received by confession of faith and the second part by consecration and faith. We should therefore not despise our birthright for temporal need but strive to keep and guard it jealously.

Thought for the day: Do not trade your birthright; it’s doubly packed.

Spiritual Blessing - Pastor E.A. Adeboye

TOPIC: Spiritual Blessing

TODAY: Sunday 30, April 2017

Memorise: Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: – Ephesians 1:3

Read: Ephesians 1:1-14 (KJV)

1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, to the saints which are at Ephesus, and to the faithful in Christ Jesus:

2 Grace be to you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:

4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:

5 Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,

6 To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.

7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;

8 Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence;

9 Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself:

10 That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him:

11 In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:

12 That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.

13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,

14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

Bible in One Year: Number 28-29, Jeremiah 23:9-22

From our memory verse today, we understand that there are physical blessings and there are spiritual blessings. The best way to distinguish between these two categories of blessings is to look at their lifespan. Physical blessings are temporal, while spiritual blessings are enduring and external in nature. An example of a physical blessing is the rain that God sends on all of humanity. Another example is the air we all have access to breathe. Having a wife or a husband also falls under the category of physical blessings, and so also is having children. Both physical and spiritual blessings come from the Lord.

However, the better of these two categories of blessings is spiritual blessings. Spiritual blessings, though manifesting in the physical world, transcend the present age. This is why Apostle Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 15:19 thus:

“If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.”

Spiritual blessings cannot be quantified in material or monetary terms. They include the Holy Spirit and His gifts, power and victory over principalities and powers, redemption through the Blood of Jesus, the forgiveness of sins, etc. The crux of all spiritual blessings can be seen in this response of our Lord Jesus Christ to the question about reward for sacrifice which Peter asked Him:

“29 And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel's, 30 But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.” - Mark 10:29-30

The spiritual blessing of eternal life crowns the physical blessings we have access to through our fellowship with Christ. No matter how long we live on earth, we shall depart from it one day. The question is, “Where will you spend eternity?” Would it be in Heaven or in Hell? My prayer for you is that you will not spend eternity in Hell in Jesus’ Name.

Action Point: Accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour today, and you will be blessed with spiritual blessings. If you are saved, pray that the Lord will load your life with His spiritual blessings today.

OFFICIAL: Sunderland FC relegated from EPL after 10-years

Sunderland FC relegated from EPL after 10-years
Sunderland’s 10-year stay in the English Premier League ended on Saturday with defeat against Bournemouth at the Stadium of Light.

The result coupled with Hull City’s goalless draw at Southampton means Sunderland are 13 points from safety with four games left but stand relegated.

Bournemouth’s Joshua King scored the only goal with just two minutes left, tapping home from Ryan Fraser’s pass.

The Norwegian also came close in the 20th minute but his shot rebounded off the post and crossbar and into the arms of Jordan Pickford.

Artur Boruc saved from Jermain Defoe in the first half, as well as from Fabio Borini and George Honeyman in the second half.

But David Moyes side failed to sustain any real pressure on the Bournemouth goal.

The Black Cats have now been relegated from the Premier League for a joint-record fourth time.

Little has gone right for Sunderland ever since Sam Allardyce, who saved the club from relegation last season with just one defeat in their final 10 games, left to join England.

Moyes was named as his replacement a day later, but he had also given a hint of what the fans should expect after just two games of the season.

The Scot was left with little time to bring in summer recruits but those he did bring in have already disappointed.

Of course majority of them are his former players at Manchester United and Everton.

Their first win did not come until November but they followed it with three victories in their next six games in a brief glimmer of success, largely built around Defoe’s goals.

But since then Sunderland have won just once in 17 games and Defoe is without a goal in 10 games.

Black Cats’ fans have grown increasingly frustrated at Moyes’ results, negative attitude and demeanour throughout the season.

These have resulted in chants for him to leave being heard in recent weeks.

Breaking: Wikipedia banned in Turkey

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, cut off Wikipedia
Turkey has blocked all access inside the country to the online encyclopaedia Wikipedia.

Officials said “an administrative measure” had been taken, but gave no reason why.

Turkish media said authorities had asked Wikipedia to remove content by writers “supporting terror”.

Turkey has temporarily blocked social media sites including Facebook and Twitter in the past, usually following protests or terror attacks.

The Turkey Blocks monitoring group said Wikipedia was unreachable from 08:00 (05:00 GMT). People in Istanbul were unable to access any pages without using a Virtual Private Network (VPN).

“After technical analysis and legal consideration based on the Law Nr. 5651 [governing the internet], an administrative measure has been taken for this website,” Turkey’s Information and Communication Technologies Authority was quoted as saying, giving no further details.

However, the Hurriyet daily newspaper said Wikipedia had been asked to remove content by certain writers whom the authorities accuse of “supporting terror” and of linking Turkey to terror groups. The site had not responded to the demands, Hurriyet said, and the ban was imposed as a result.

Turkey Blocks and Turkish media, including Hurriyet, said the provisional order would need to be backed by a full court ruling in the next few days.

It’s become all too familiar here: the endless “loading” icon followed by the message “server timed out”.

Blocking websites is a common tool of the Turkish authorities: Twitter, Facebook and YouTube have suffered the same fate several times, and numerous anti-government sites are inaccessible.

Critics say it smacks of Turkey’s repression of free speech: over half of all requests to Twitter to remove content have come from Turkey, and the country now ranks 155 of 180 in the press freedom index of the watchdog Reporters without Borders.

Social media was in uproar as news of the ban emerged, with some users speculating that it might be a bid to suppress criticism on President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s Wikipedia page.

Mr Erdogan narrowly won a controversial 16 April referendum on increasing his powers, but the issue has deeply divided the country.

One Twitter user noted that the Wikipedia page on Turkey’s referendum has a section on “controversies and electoral misconduct”, and cites claims that the government suppressed the No campaign through “arrests, control of the media and political suppression”.

The Turkish government has previously denied censoring the internet, blaming outages on spikes in usage after major events.

Wikipedia has also faced censorship in other countries, including a temporary ban in Russia, and repeated crackdowns in China.

Xenophobia: Popular pastor visits Nigerian victims in South Africa

Xenophobia: Popular pastor visits Nigerian victims in South Africa
On the 8th of April 2017, Dr. Chris Okafor who was in South Africa for a mega crusade paid a courtesy call on the Nigerian consulate in Johannesburg, all in a bid to identify with the consulate and receive important briefings on the much talked about xenophobic attacks on Nigerians.

Apparently, the Consul General, Mr. Godwin A. Adama and the Minister (Consular & Immigration) at the Consulate, Mr. Anthony A. Ogbe had just returned from a visit to Polokwane, a city in the Limpopo province, about three hours drive from Johannesburg, where a Nigerian had been killed and many others critically injured in a xenophobic attack only days before.
Xenophobia: Popular pastor visits Nigerian victims in South Africa
Upon exhaustive briefing, Dr. Okafor offered prayers for peace and insisted he’d love to travel to the troubled region to show solidarity and render whatever help he could to fellow Nigerians who had fallen victims. The trip was scheduled a week later and on the 15th of April, Dr. Okafor and his team travelled to Polokwane in company of the Minister (Consular & Immigration), Mr. Anthony A. Ogbe.

Meeting point was at the Redeemed Christian Church of God building where the Nigerian victims converged to meet with the man of God.

There was Peter Idowu Kolawole who almost lost his right leg to the attack, sustaining deep machete cuts on his head- he struggled to walk with crutches; There was Kayode Showunmi, a fashion designer who only a week before the attack arrived South Africa for the first time to visit his brother, Razak Ajao- he had machete cuts all over his body and almost had his manhood cut off. The attackers also burned his international passport. He survived by the whiskers. However, his brother Razak Ajao was not so lucky- he was murdered in cold blood, leaving behind his young widow, Basirat and four children; There was Raphael Nwachukwu who like most Nigerians in the region was no longer sleeping in his home but slept wherever he felt safe around the city- he was spotted out in his new hiding place and given the beating of his life with two massive machete cuts to his head, a swollen arm and cuts to his stomach. The attackers took away his car and all his belongings in it; There was Wale Adewara, a science teacher who was also mercilessly attacked with his wife- they made away with everything they had on them; And there was a South African “Good Samaritan” who tried to stop the attackers from killing Peter Idowu. His own people, the attackers thought he was over stepping his bounds and they beat him silly, dislocating his right arm for trying to protect a Nigerian. The list goes on and on… about twenty victims in total.

Xenophobia: Popular pastor visits Nigerian victims in South Africa
Dr Chris Okafor who was completely overwhelmed with grief simply retorted

“I never knew it was this bad. Nobody should have to go through this level of horror. We are brothers and should not do this to ourselves. If blacks are killing blacks, how can we then convince the world that ‘Black Lives Matter’?” He later offered hearty prayers and made a donation of $7,000 promising to return with more money and relief materials for the victims. The community exploded with joy as, according to them, no one has ever done anything that close for them since they’ve been crying out for help.

It was a brief moment of huge relief from so much pain. They thanked the man of God and prayed God’s blessings on him and his ministry.

As at the time of filing this report, it is reported that Dr. Chris Okafor is hastening to rush more cash and relief materials to the victims, whilst advising other men of God to team up with his effort in helping our devastated brothers and sisters in South Africa.
