Man stoned to death in Ebonyi

The Ebonyi State Police Command has confirmed the murder of a man, Philip Ugwu, 60, by suspected worshippers following a land dispute in Afikpo Local Government Area.

The Public Relations Officer of the command, Mr George Okafor, said on Monday that the incident occurred at Amebo-Ndebo village.

Okafor said that the matter was reported to the police on Sept. 30 by the wife of the deceased, Mrs. Abani Ugwu, adding that one Tochukwu Okoh, an evangelist, had been arrested in connection with the incident.

He said the deceased’s wife alleged that Okoh and three others attacked her husband with stones.

The officer also quoted the widow as saying that her husband who could not withstand the attack eventually became unconscious and was rushed to a hospital where he was confirmed dead.

He said that his body had been deposited in a mortuary and would undergo autopsy.

The spokesperson said that the divisional police officer for the area led a team of detectives and anti-crime patrol officers to the scene and arrested the suspect.

He said, “We are currently on the trail of other suspects and I am sure that they will soon be arrested due to the useful information at our disposal.

“We assure the public that the matter will be investigated thoroughly while the culprits will be duly prosecuted.”

The victim, popularly called Boxer or Coach, had argued with the worshippers in a new generation church over the erection of a fence to demarcate their lands.

An eyewitness said, “We heard Boxer’s wife screaming that her husband had been attacked by some worshippers and before we could get to the scene, he was lying unconscious.

“He was immediately rushed to the hospital but his wife identified one of the attackers still with a stone who was immediately apprehended and handed over to the police.

“The victim’s wife explained that he had purchased and built on the parcel of land even before the church came to lay claim over it.”

The witness said that the matter had previously been reported to the traditional council during which the head pastor of the church, still at large, was invited.

Trump invites four of Bill Clinton 'sex victims' to the debate

Donald Trump took four of the women who accused Bill Clinton of sexual assault to the debate on Sunday. Before Sunday night's debate against Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump allowed reporters to interview the victims, Kathleen Willey, Juanita Broaddrick, Kathy Shelton and Paula Jones – in St. Louis.
Broaddrick, an Arkansas nursing home administrator who has accused Bill Clinton of forcibly raping her when he was the state's attorney general, said that 'actions speak louder than words.'

'Mr. Trump may have said some bad words, but Bill Clinton raped me. And Hillary Clinton threatened me. I don't think there's any comparison.'Shelton who was raped at the age of 12 by a man whom Hillary Clinton defended in court was also present. She said:

'At 12 years old Hillary put me through something that you would never put a 12-year-old through.'
'And she says she's for women and children. And she was asked last year what happened, and she said she's supposed to defend [clients] whether they did it or not. Now she's laughing on tape, saying she –' Shelton, who became overcome with emotion, stopped speaking..Then Trump said: 'You went through a lot'.

Shelton respoinded: 'Yes sir, I did,' she answered.
The on Twitter she said:

'I may be Hillary Clinton’s 1st female victim. She ruined my life; defended my rapist & blamed me. I was 12 yrs old. Then she laughed at me,' one message read. 'I don’t care if Trump said gross things. I care that Hillary Clinton lied, terrorized, & mocked me, defending my rapist,' she added. Paula Jones, who won an $800,000 lawsuit settlement after accusing Bill Clinton of sexual harassment, was also present.

Kathleen Willey, who accused Bill Clinton of allegedly groping her in a room near the Oval Office in1993, was also present. She said she was having a private meeting with Clinton when he embraced her, kissed her on the mouth, grabbed her breast and put her hand on his crotch.
She said:
"I just remember thinking, 'What in the world is he doing?'" Willey said. "I was just startled."

She said she had a meeting with Clinton to ask for a paying job because her husband was having financial problems and facing legal troubles.

Unfortunately, her husband, Ed Willey, killed himself that same day of the meeting, though neither Kathleen Willey or the president or the president knew about it at the time.

Reporters in the room listened patiently to the four women indict the Clintons. As soon as they were done, reporter started hammering Donald Trump with questions about the sex audio tape.

'Does your star power allow you to touch women without their consent?' demanded a Wall Street Journal writer.
'Did you touch the women without their consent?' asked the Associated Press. 'Why did you say you touched women without their consent, Mr. Trump?' asked a CBS News journalist. The questions annoyed Paula Jones who exploded and said:

'Why don't y'all go ask Bill Clinton that?' she exclaimed. 'Go ahead, ask Hillary as well!'

Commissioner of Police under fire for playing a role in the aborted arrest of Judge in Rivers State

The Commissioner of Police, Rivers State Command, Mr. Francis Odesanya, is under fire for his role in the aborted arrest of a judge of the Federal High Court, Port Harcourt, in the early hours of Saturday, The PUNCH learnt on Sunday.

The Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, was said to have rushed to No. 35, Forces Avenue, the GRA official residence of the judge and prevented operatives of the Department of State Services from arresting the judge.

Wike, who was said to have had a confrontation with the DSS officials, was said to have been joined at the scene by the police commissioner.

A highly-placed source, who spoke to The PUNCH on condition of anonymity, on Sunday, said preliminary report had shown that Odesanya prevented the security agencies from carrying out a legitimate order.

Based on the report, he said the police authorities as well as the Police Service Commission would sanction the police boss.

He, however, did not disclose the kind of punishment to be meted out to him.

The source stated, “The Rivers Commissioner of Police will be dealt with appropriately. It has been established that the DSS officials who were at the judge’s residence had with them duly signed search and arrest warrants.

“By stopping the security agents from doing their work, what he did was to obstruct justice. He stopped those people from carrying out a legitimate order.

“He will be sanctioned accordingly.”

The Public Relations Officer, Rivers State Command, Mr. Nnamdi Omoni, had told journalists that policemen were only at the judge’s residence to ensure there was no breakdown of law and order.

It was also learnt on Sunday that no fewer than 15 judges across the country were under investigation by the DSS.

It was gathered that the DSS was investigating the judges based on various petitions, which accused them of corruption.

A top Federal Government official, who confided in our correspondent on Sunday, said the 15 judges included seven that were arrested on Friday and Saturday.

The DSS had, in what it called a sting operation, arrested Sylvester Ngwuta and Inyang Okoro, both of the Supreme Court;  the suspended Presiding Justice of the Court of Appeal, Ilorin Division, Justice Mohammed Tsamiya; Justice Kabiru Auta of the Kano State High Court and Justice Adeniyi Ademola of the Federal High Court, Abuja.

Other arrested were a former Chief Judge of Enugu State, Justice I. A. Umezulike, and Muazu Pindiga of the Federal High Court, Gombe Division.

It was gathered that besides the judges, the DSS had invited three court registry staff across the country as part of the investigations into the alleged corruption in the judiciary.

“Currently, we are investigation 15 judges, including the seven that were arrested. Three court registry staff have been invited and quizzed. We have facts and figures,” the source stated.

The government official faulted a claim that the DSS acted unilaterally without carrying along the National Judicial Council.

He stated that the Service sent letters to the NJC and the Ministry of Justice concerning the investigations of the judges.

According to him, while the ministry responded, the NJC did not respond, adding that the DSS did not dramatise the arrest of the judges as alleged.

The government official also explained that the fact that the judges were under the authority of the NJC did not exclude them from investigation and prosecution.

He stated, “They have no immunity. Even those (governors), who have immunity, can be investigated. There are many professional groups, including the Nigeria Union of Journalists; if you commit a crime, besides facing disciplinary actions from your union, you should be investigated and prosecuted according to the law of the country.”

The source further explained the constitutional mandate of the DSS, adding that the service had not intervened in what did not concern it by investigating the judges.

Giving an insight into the allegation against some of the judges, he alleged that some of them received bribes to compromise judgments.

He also cited the case of a judge who had a N1.5bn estate, alleging that granting of bails to defendants had been turned into an avenue for making money by some judicial officers.

It was learnt that the government was not happy with way the police handled the investigation into the alleged Senate forgery involving the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu.

Presidency backs clampdown on judges

The Presidency on Sunday backed the weekend’s raids on the residences of some judges and their arrest, saying due process was followed.

It, however, said the clampdown was not against the judiciary but against corruption.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said this in a statement made available to journalists.

Shehu said the Presidency had been told by the DSS that all due processes of the law, including the possession of search and arrest warrants, were obtained before the searches were carried out.

Describing the raids as “surgical operation”, he said to suggest that the government acted outside the law in a dictatorial manner, was therefore to breach the interest of the state.

The statement read, “The recent surgical operation against some judicial officers is specifically targeted at corruption and not at the judiciary as an institution.

“In a robust democracy such as ours, there is bound to be a plurality of opinions on any given issue, but there is a convergence of views that the country has a corruption problem that needs to be corrected.

“But reports by a section of the media are giving us cause for concern.

“To suggest that the government is acting outside the law, in a dictatorial manner, is to breach the interest of the state.”

Nigeria sliding into fascism, alleges PDP

The national leadership of the PDP said the arrest of the judges was unwarranted.

A statement by the spokesperson for the PDP, Mr. Dayo Adeyeye, in Abuja on Sunday, said, “This invasion is the latest in a series of actions taken by the President Muhammadu Buhari administration which revealed  its disregard for the rule of law and its abject disdain for the principle of separation of powers.”

Adeyeye alleged that the country was sliding into what he called “inexorable fascism”, adding that it began with the alleged invasion of the Akwa Ibom State Government House by the DSS and the continued detention of several people despite courts ordering their release.

He said, “This slide into fascism has included sustained attacks on the leadership of the National Assembly as President Buhari has sought to break its independence and make it a rubberstamp to suit his will.

“It is worthy to note that never in the history of our country has any President attacked the judiciary in such a manner.

“Even the late dictator, Gen. Sani Abacha, whose regime is remembered by many as the second worst regime in Nigerian history, did not carry out such Gestapo-style attacks on the members of the judiciary.”

But the APC said it was concerned about the desperation of the opposition PDP to drag the President into the raids by the DSS. Read More

President Buhari reacts over arrest of judges

Nigerian President

President Muhammadu Buhari has made his first official reaction to the arrest of seven senior judges between Friday night and Saturday morning.
Mr. Buhari said the raids on the judges residence by the State Security Service, SSS, was an assault on corruption and not on the judiciary.

Seven judges, including two of the Supreme Court, were arrested in the raids, condemned by lawyers and rights groups, and are expected to be charged to court from tomorrow.
The president in a statement by his media adviser, Garba Shehu, described the raids as ‘surgical’ saying due process was followed in the arrests.
“The Presidency has received assurances from the DSS that all due processes of the law, including the possession of search and arrest warrants were obtained before the searches,” he said.

Read Mr. Shehu’s full statement below:
The Presidency assures that the President reserves his highest respect for the institution of the judiciary as the third arm of government.
To this end, the President will not do anything to undermine its independence.

President Buhari remains a committed democrat, in words and in his actions, and will not take any action in violation of the constitution.
The recent surgical operation against some judicial officers is specifically targeted at corruption and not at the judiciary as an institution.
In a robust democracy such as ours, there is bound to be a plurality of opinions on any given issue, but there is a convergence of views that the country has a corruption problem that needs to be corrected.
But reports by a section of the media are giving us cause for concern.
In undertaking the task of reporting, the media should be careful about the fault lines they open. It is wrong to present this incident as a confrontation between the executive and judicial arms of government.
The Presidency has received assurances from the DSS that all due processes of the law, including the possession of search and arrest warrants were obtained before the searches.
To suggest that the government is acting outside the law in a dictatorial manner is to breach the interest of the state.

TOPIC: Satisfied by Righteousness

Bible Text: But my God shall supply all your needs according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. — Philippians 4:19

Man hungers for food, and God sends the sun and rain upon the golden fields of grain. The grain is made into flour, and flour into bread, and man’s physical hunger is satisfied. Man hungers for love; and God ignites the fire of affection in another heart, and two hearts are made complete in the bonds of holy matrimony.

Man hungers for knowledge, and God raises up institutions of learning, calls men to be instructors, puts it into the hearts of the rich to endow them; and men are satisfied in their thirst for knowledge. Man hungers for fellowship; and God allows him to build cities where men can share their industry, and their knowledge, and their skills.

Don’t tell me that God can supply man with an abundance of everything material and yet will let him starve spiritually! . . . God will satisfy the hunger and thirst of those who desire His righteousness because He loves the world with an undying affection.

Prayer for the day: You have abundantly supplied my greatest need, heavenly Father, for You have given me love.

National Judicial Council holds emergency meeting over DSS raids

NJC holds emergency meeting over DSS raids

According to Punch, the National Judicial Council will on Tuesday hold an emergency session.

It was learnt that the NJC originally scheduled the meeting solely to consider the candidate most suitable for appointment as the next Chief Justice of Nigeria from the list forwarded to it by the Federal Judicial Service Commission last week.

But following the raids on the houses of some judicial officers by the men of the Department of State Services over the weekend, it was learnt that the outgoing CJN and the Chairman of both the NJC and FJSC, Justice Mahmud Mohammed, directed that the issue be included on the agenda of the scheduled emergency meeting.

The DSS, at the end of the operations, which lasted at least 12 hours between Friday night and Saturday morning, arrested Justices Sylvester Ngwuta and John Okoro, both of the Supreme Court, as well as Justice Adeniyi Ademola of the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The security operatives also searched the house of another judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Nnamdi Dimgba, but he was not arrested.

A senior officer of the security agency, Mr. Abdullahi Garba, who spoke with journalists in Abuja after the operations on Saturday, said that a large amount including foreign/local currencies had been recovered from three of the judges. He gave the breakdown of these to include: N93,558,000.00, $530,087, £25,970, and €5,680 (a total of over N270m).

In Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, the raid started in the early hours of Saturday when scores of DSS agents besieged the house of a Federal High Court judge at No. 35, Forces Avenue.

The CJN was said to have been embarrassed by the developments, and immediately put a call through to Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo and the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami.

A source told our correspondent on Sunday that, “The CJN decided that the NJC would take a position on the issue at the emergency meeting of the NJC already scheduled to hold on Tuesday for the consideration of the next CJN.”

The Federal Judicial Service Council met last Wednesday and concluded its part of the ongoing process of appointing a successor to the outgoing CJN, The PUNCH has learnt.

At the end of its meeting presided over by its chairman, who is the incumbent CJN, the commission nominated the next three most senior Justices of the Supreme Court to the National Judicial Council.

Credible judiciary sources told our correspondent that Justice Walter Onnoghen, who is the most favoured by the tradition of succession arrangement in the judiciary – being the current second in rank to the CJN – topped the FJSC’s list of nominees.

Justice Onnoghen was born in 1950 at Okurike in Biase Local Government Area of Cross River State, and was appointed to the Supreme Court bench in 2005.

The next on the list was JusticeTanko Muhammad who was born on December 31, 1953 at Doguwa-Giade, Giade Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

Justice Muhammad was appointed to the apex court bench on January 7, 2007.

The third on the list was Justice Suleiman Galadima, who was born on October in 1946 in Nasarawa State.

Justice Galadima was appointed to the Supreme Court bench in 2010.

Justice Mohammed, who was born on November 10, 1946, will leave office on November 10, 2016, when he will attain the mandatory 70 years retirement age.

The PUNCH learnt that the NJC, which met only last week Thursday  when it recommended three judges for sanction, would not adhere to the official three-month interval before convening its next meeting to avoid a situation that could lead to a vacuum in the office of the CJN.

Our correspondent gathered that the NJC had scheduled to meet any moment from the time the Federal Judicial Service Commission completes its own part of the appointment process.

Going by tradition and the NJC rules, the CJN commences the process of appointment of his successor by sending the names of the four most senior Justices of the Supreme Court after him to the FJSC.

Seniority of justices is by dates of appointment to the apex court bench.

The FJSC would later conduct interviews and other appointment procedures for the four justices.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: If you are a Christian, it is your responsibility to win the lost.

Many years ago, R. A. Torrey (of blessed memory) went to a restaurant to eat with his friends. He was there for one and a half hours, and within the period, each time he looked at one of the waiters, the Holy Ghost ministered to him to talk to the waiter about his salvation. Unfortunately, he did not until he left the hotel. An hour later, the hotel authority found the waiter hanging behind the kitchen. He committed suicide!

R. A. Torrey could not recover from that regrettable experience. God gave him the opportunity to change someone’s eternal destiny at the dying minutes but he missed it.

Maybe you have missed the opportunity of redirecting someone’s eternal destiny from hellfire to God’s Kingdom before; you can ask God for mercy and a second chance. But if you persist in refusing to seize the opportunity to save the lost, God will ask you of the souls of those who perished as a result of your failure to witness to them. That is the repercussion of failing to win the lost.

Beloved, if you are a Christian, it is your responsibility to win the lost.

Remember this: If you are a Christian, it is your responsibility to win the lost.

1. Ask God for mercy if you have ever ignored the prompting of the Spirit to lead a lost soul to Christ.
2. Ensure you talk to at least one soul about Christ daily.
3. Use every avenue you find yourself as a platform for evangelism.

PRAYER: O LORD, forgive my failure to win the lost in the past. Give me the grace to harvest souls for Your Kingdom. Cause the grip of negative addictions to be broken off the lives of the people, in Jesus’ Name.

Live Free From Fear - Kenneth Copeland

Welcome to Kenneth Copeland's Devotional

TOPIC: Live Free From Fear

He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. - Psalm 91:1-3

Is it possible to live free from fear in this dangerous and unpredictable world? Yes, it most definitely is! Because protection is a solid promise of God.

But it's not a promise that's offered to just anyone. It is promised to those who abide in the Lord. To abide means "to dwell, to remain and to continue." To abide in the shadow of the Almighty is to live in continual union with Him, keeping His Word and obeying His voice. Those who abide in the Lord can live without dread of what the devil will do.

Let me make this clear though—God's promise of protection doesn't guarantee that the devil will leave you alone! It means that God will give you a way of escape every time the devil rears his ugly face at you.

If you are afraid of the dangers around you, spend more time in the Word and in prayer until your trust in God overcomes your fear. Draw closer to the Lord until you are abiding in the shadow of the Almighty and—no matter how dangerous this world becomes—He shall surely deliver you.

Preparing For Heaven by Pastor W. F Kumuyi

TOPIC: Preparing For Heaven

Text: Titus 2:9-15

Key Verse: "For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world" (Titus 2:11,12).

The Bible has a word for every situation, whether past, present, the earthly tomorrow or the eternal future. This is because it was written by the One Who has always been in these circumstances. The Bible says our God is the "same yesterday, and today and forever" (Hebrews 3:8). As heaven-bound Christians, the presentation in Titus 2:11-14 should be our spiritual handbook.

What we do on earth should be in favorable response to what the Lord has done for us. He brought salvation through Jesus Christ's death on the cross at Calvary. Without it, we are lost and would have remained so for eternity. This unmerited love (grace), should now move us to deny ungodliness, worldly lusts and vices which have taken hold of mankind. We are expected to live "soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world"(verse 11). This way of life, sharply different from what obtains outside the Church, is to keep us watchful in expectation of "that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ" (verses 13,14). Consequentially, if we are constantly watching for our Lord's second coming, we must not fail to obey what He taught us, beginning with the injunctions in the Sermon on the Mount through His commandment on the Great Commission to His final word in Revelation: "Surely I come quickly".

The implication is that since He is coming "quickly" (soon), we must "Watch... therefore, and pray always, ...[and] be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man" (Luke 21:36). The chief evidence of faithful stewardship and waiting is to heed the word of Christ: "If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed" (John 8:31).

Thought for the day: Faithfully waiting for Jesus' return amounts to preparing for heaven.

Read: Matthew 18:1-6 (KJV)

1 At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?

2 And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them,

3 And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.

4 Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

5 And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me.

6 But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.

Bible in One Year: Ezekiel 46:19-48:35, Psalms 77:11-20

The child-like faith is what everybody requires, not only to make it to heaven but also to enjoy his or her days on the earth. If we do not believe this because it sounds illogical, we must believe it because Jesus said it. What is then required of us is to pray for the kind of faith that is comparable with that of a little child. The first thing about a little child is that he is very trusting. In my living room several years ago, there used to be a portrait of a little child looking so innocent with the inscription; “No Problem”. The faith that will enable us not to see problems but see only God who specialises in solving problems is the best for us.

Another characteristic trait of little children is that they forgive easily. Unlike adults who keep malice, children forgive and forget the wrong done to them almost immediately after it’s done. The Bible says in Ephesians 4:32:

“And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.”

Children fulfil his Biblical injunction freely. Children could be very generous with their things except in some unusual occasions. Without knowing the spiritual implication of their actions, children are tender hearted with their peers. This is exactly what God wants from us. In Colossians 3:12-13, the Bible also says:

“12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; 13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.”

There are many blessings we will access from the throne of God our Father if we can begin to take after children. For example, if we freely forgive those who wrong us like a child will do, our prayers will receive quick answers from God. In Mark 11:25, Jesus Christ said:

“And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.”

This instruction that comes from our Lord is simply saying that before we pray, we must first forgive! We can see the reason many of our prayers are not answered; we refuse to forgive. I pray that a user of this devotional will find grace to forgive and be kind hearted in Jesus’name.

Prayer Point: Father, please help my faith and transform me to be able to forgive freely and be tender-hearted in Jesus’ name.

Former INEC Boss, Jega says the 2015 Election he conducted was not perfect

Ex INEC Boss

Former National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega recently revealed that the 2015 election was not perfect.
Jega said this on Saturday, October 8, 2016, in Lagos at the 50th birthday lecture of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Legal Adviser, Dr. Muiz Banire.

The former boss of the nation’s electoral body said the recklessness of politicians need to be checked before Nigeria can achieve a perfect election.

Jega also said “The 2015 elections were far from perfect, but they represented a remarkable departure from our ignominious history of fraudulent elections to the path of sustainable elections with credibility and integrity.

“Badly or poorly conducted elections had in the past damped our enthusiasm for transition to democracy and undermined our capacity to enjoy good democratic governance, with dire negative consequences on the livelihood and aspirations of a majority Nigerians.

“Identifying the attitudes of politicians as one of challenges militating against the nation’s electoral process, the unwholesome mind set of our politicians is one of the challenges of our electoral process. There are some decent politicians but they are very few.”
