JUST IN: Nigerian Army insists that Shekau is dead

Breaking news
NIGERIA - The Nigerian Army has again declared that Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau is dead. However, Major General Lucky Irabor, Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, is the one announcing Shekau’s death this time.

Speaking during a tour of Adamawa state on Thursday, September 1, Major General Irabor insisted that Shekau is dead, Vanguard reports. He said that the individual originally identified as Shekau has indeed been killed. His words: “I can confirm to you that the original Shekau was killed, the second Shekau was killed, and the man presenting himself as Shekau, I can also confirm to you that few days ago, he was wounded. We are yet to confirm whether he is dead or not.”

According to Major General Irabor, the Army does not make statements that are not based on facts. He said the Nigerian troops fighting insurgency in the northeast, will continue the military operations until the last terrorist is taken out, as there is division among the Boko Haram members. He added: “They released videos to prove that they are still active, but that’s just a facade.” Since his emergence in 2009, Shekau has been declared dead by the Nigerian Army on several occasions, though it has never been solidly confirmed.

Just in: Facebook satellite for Africa destroyed in SpaceX rocket blast

An unmanned SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket exploded on the launch pad during a test in Florida on Thursday, destroying a satellite that Facebook planned to use to beam high-speed internet to Africa.

The blast at Cape Canaveral — though it caused no injuries — marks a setback for the California-based private space firm and its founder, internet entrepreneur Elon Musk, who wants to revolutionize the launch industry by making rocket components reusable.

“Loss of Falcon vehicle today during propellant fill operation,” Musk tweeted. “Originated around upper stage oxygen tank. Cause still unknown. More soon.”

Dramatic footage broadcast by ABC News showed the rocket burst into a roaring ball of flame amid what appeared to be a succession of blasts — sending its payload tumbling to the ground as a dense plume of black smoke filled the air.

“At approximately 9:07 am ET (1307 GMT), during a standard pre-launch static fire test for the Amos-6 mission, there was an anomaly at SpaceX’s Cape Canaveral Space Launch Complex 40 resulting in loss of the vehicle,” the firm said. “Per standard operating procedure, the pad was clear and there were no injuries.”

But the explosion destroyed the Israeli communications satellite that the Falcon 9 was due to deliver into orbit on Saturday — drawing a dismayed reaction from Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg.

“As I’m here in Africa, I’m deeply disappointed to hear that SpaceX’s launch failure destroyed our satellite that would have provided connectivity to so many entrepreneurs and everyone else across the continent,” Zuckerberg said on his Facebook page.

Facebook was contracted to use the Amos-6 to provide broadband internet coverage for large parts of sub-Saharan Africa and other remote parts of the world as part of the social media giant’s initiative. “Fortunately, we have developed other technologies like Aquila that will connect people as well,” Zuckerberg said, referring to the solar-powered plane being developed by Facebook to make the internet available in remote areas.

“We will keep working until everyone has the opportunities this satellite would have provided.” European satellite operator Eutelsat — Facebook’s partner in the project — said in a statement it was committed to expanding broadband access in Africa despite the loss of the Amos-6.

Heaviest payload

A NASA spokeswoman told AFP that emergency services at the nearby Kennedy Space Center were monitoring the situation and conducting air quality tests to ensure there is no threat to the health of staff. Officials at the center advised workers to remain inside until further notice, but Brevard County Emergency Management said there was no threat to the public from the incident.

The Amos-6 was the heaviest payload to date for a SpaceX rocket, with an estimated value of between $200-300 million, according to John Logsdon, former director of the Space Policy Institute at George Washington University. The accident — the second of its kind since SpaceX was founded in 2002 — comes just over a year after a Falcon 9 rocket failed after liftoff on June 28, 2015, destroying a Dragon cargo capsule bound for the International Space Station (ISS).

Before that, SpaceX had logged 18 successful launches of the Falcon 9 — including six of 12 planned supply missions to the ISS carried out as part of a $1.6 billion contract with NASA.  It had carried out another eight successful launches since June 2015, including last month when a Falcon 9 successfully placed a Japanese communications satellite in orbit, and then landed intact on a floating drone ship.

Before then the firm lost several rockets as it attempted to land them upright on an ocean platform at the end of a flight — a crucial part of its strategy for reusable spacecraft.

‘Valuable experience’

While the blast is likely to disrupt SpaceX plans for six more launches between now and January 2017, experts made clear that such incidents are a normal part of the space learning curve. “It’s clearly a setback, but how great the setback is and how long the delay, it’s impossible to know until there is more information available,” said Logsdon.

He noted that the launch pad damaged on Thursday was distinct from the one that will serve to launch SpaceX’s Crew Dragon, intended to ferry astronauts to the ISS starting in late 2017.

Loizos Heracleous, a professor of strategy at Warwick Business School, said such setbacks were par for the course — and would not affect SpaceX’s stated long-term goals of slashing the cost of space flight through the use of reusable rockets, and eventually colonizing Mars.

“SpaceX is gathering valuable experience, and each accident brings lessons on how to enhance the integrity of the craft for future missions,” he said. “Given that SpaceX is working to provide NASA with a way to transport not just cargo, but also astronauts to the International Space Station, it is especially crucial that such learning takes place before that happens.”

We made promises to Nigerians, We shall fulfill all, says Buhari

ABUJA, NIGERIA - President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday pleaded with Nigerians to be patient with his administration while assuring that the pains they are currently going through will soon give way to development.

Buhari, said this in Osogbo on Thursday at the inauguration of the Osogbo Government High School built by the administration of Governor Rauf Aregbesola.

" We promised Nigerian people positive and progressive change during our campaign. We are not and shall not be deterred from that noble undertaking".

“But as we have learnt from history, change has never been attained by any nation on a bed of roses, but rather, through patience, perseverance and steadfastness. “We are quite aware of the pains and inconveniences that have been the lot of the citizenry in the past one year as we strive to faithfully implement our programmes in fulfilment of our change agenda.

“We are however comforted by the real change and progress we have made in fighting corruption and restoring integrity to government; providing security for lives and property; and positioning the government for effectiveness and especially deregulating the oil sector.

“We must also not forget the fiscal discipline that has now characterised government business at all levels. This indeed is how it should be and we are determined to introduce and implement actions and measures that will entrench the change mantra in our individual lives just as we are doing in curtailing excessive waste and rent seeking in governance.

“We are determined to remain on track as we strive to deliver to rescue the country from past mistakes in fulfilment of our promise of improving the conditions of our people and making Nigeria a prosperous country.”

BREAKING: 'Nigerians regret voting for Buhari, he has no solution to our problem' - Apir

Economic Recession in Nigeria

BENUE, NIGERIA - Following the declaration by the National Bureau of Statistics, NBS that the nation’s economy has gone into recession, social critic and former All Progressives Congress, APC, governorship aspirant in Benue state, Mr. Nath Apir has stated that Nigerians are currently regretting voting for President Muhammadu Buhari at the last general elections.

Apir who spoke Thursday, in Makurdi, lamented that the APC led government had failed to do the needful to sustain the level of economic growth recorded by ex-President Goodluck Jonathan-led administration.

He said, “during the last administration. Our economy was performing above average. This government came in and because every government comes in to fix the problems of the previous government. It took President Buhari six months to appoint Ministers in a country where, whether rightly or wrongly was rated by the World Bank and the IMF as Africa’s largest and number one economy. We did not get that rating through bribe.

“On coming to government it behooved this administration to inflate the tyres that were low on air pressure, grease those bearings that needed to be oiled so that we don’t grind to a halt just like we are in now.

“Our country is in shambles, the people can hardly feed, the Naira has crashed to over N400 to the Dollar. They talk of recovering money from looters and we have not seen where the monies have gone to. Where exactly are the three or five key pillars of the economic policies of the APC government?

“Agree that there are issues of militancy in the south south, other governments also faced same challenge. Buhari came in with a military mentality to crush them. Look, civilized people negotiate, they don’t do that because they are weak. They do that beacuse they know that you cannot go forward in a situation of crisis and chaos.

“He has just aggravated our economic situation in the country. Six months no Minister and the country was drifting and has not recovered till today and he has brought us to this level. Nigerians are regretting voting Buhari, that is the truth.

Continuing, Apir said, “all his policies had been anti corruption, by the time he came in as military ruler in 1983 we resorted to the purchasing of essential commodities. We are back to that vicious circle. We are back to anti corruption war without real economic policies.

“Let me tell you, western countries are neck deep in corruption. Don’t be deceived, they have been receiving stolen monies from Africa without questioning the sources of such wealth. Today we are asking for the return of those monies and they are asking for proof that the monies are our own when they did not ask the alleged thieves where they got the monies from.

“These are basic things we should know, they use the monies to develop their economies. President Buhari’s war on corruption is excellent and I support it, but he must not use his anti corruption war to destroy the country’s economy.

“He should strengthen institutions to fight corruption. You want to fight corruption go after bankers, permanent secretaries as well, don’t just go after only highly exposed political people. These people cannot transfer monies without the banks. Permanent secretaries are the accounting officers of their offices. How come they are not being held to account.

“The economy is in shambles and he has no solution. The experience of the Finance Minister is low. Who is running this economy. You cannot assemble a group of yes sir people and expect good results. No one to challenge you. An educated man said, ‘we are all ignorant of everything except in that which we know’, that is why you need great minds around you as a leader. So our country is in recession, though I’m not surprise because we had same in 1983 to 1985.

“Who is running this economy? As a President he is looking at a maze but you cannot read or lead the economy inside that maze without anybody interpreting it to you, it’s a matrix. Buhari has to reorganize his administration, he has to push out those who obviously have no business in the government, corrupt and inefficient people are everywhere in this government they must leave now to save our country.”

NIGERIA - A day after Aero Contractors announced the suspension of operations and placed staff on indefinitely leave, another national airline, First Nation, has closed business.

The National Civil Aviation Authority announced on Thursday that First Nation had been ordered to shut down for mandatory maintenance.

The director-general, Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Muhtar Usman, said in a statement that the indefinite suspension of operations by the airline followed its engine replacement programme involving one of the aircraft in its fleet.

Mr. Usman said with another aircraft due for mandatory maintenance in line with NCAA’s regulations, the airline cannot continue its operations.

“In these circumstances, these airlines clearly cannot continue to undertake schedule operations, hence the inevitable recourse to self-regulatory suspension,” the NCAA boss said.

“It is against the Nigerian civil aviation regulations for airline operators to carry out scheduled commercial operations with only one aircraft.”

Mr. Usman, who said this was the same premise Aero Contractors was ordered to suspend its operations, said NCAA would not compromise safety and security of airlines operations in the airspace.

He said every facet of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations and Standard and Recommended Practices (SARPs) must be adhered to with due diligence.

He explained that everything had been put in place to continue ensuring compliance.

The First Nation could not be reached for comment for this story.

The decision came as the suspension of Aero Contractors’ took effect Thursday.

The airline had claimed it suspended flights due to the difficult business environment in the country. At least 1,400 staff of Aero have been placed on an indefinite leave.

BREAKING NEWS: President Buhari should resign,he's incompetent - PDP

Economic recession in Nigeria
NIGERIA - President Buhari-led administration had acknowledged the worrisome economic data, but assured of improvements in a bid to suppress the fears of Nigerians.

The Peoples Democratic Party has called for President Muhammadu Buhari's resignation, accusing him of incompetence amid the economic the recession in the country.

The party stated this on Wednesday, August 31, hours after figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) confirmed that Nigeria had slipped into recession.

“We join all well meaning Nigerians to call on Mr. Buhari to resign if he is unable to reverse the disastrous economic decline he has brought on Nigerians,” the party said.

The NBS had said Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product decreased by 2.06 per cent, marking the first major recession in 29 years for Africa’s largest economy.

In a statement on Wednesday, signed by its director of new media, Deji Adeyanju, the PDP said the current crisis is a direct consequence of Buhari’s ineptitude and incompetence.

“Nothing better showcases the absolute ineptitude and incompetence of the Muhammadu Buhari administration than the GDP, Inflation and unemployment figures released by the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics today,” the party said.

“The result of these indices is that Nigeria is in its worst economic state for 29 years — dating back to 1987 when the nation had to take harsh steps to recover from President Buhari’s policies of 1984-85.

“As with 1984-85, companies are fleeing our shores in droves. Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) recently stated that 272 companies have shut down in the past one year,” Adeyanju said.

He also quoted key aspects of the detailed data as released by the NBS and compared them with what they were before the PDP was voted out in 2015 after a 16-year streak.

“Portfolio investment declined to an estimated $245.3m in Q2 2016. This represents a 9.5% from $271.0m in Q1 2016 & is a far cry from $2.81bn in Q2 2015,” Mr. Adeyanju said. “A total of 4,580,602 people have lost their jobs since May 29, 2015.”

The Buhari administration had acknowledged the worrisome economic data, but assured of improvements in a bid to suppress the fears of Nigerians.

“The just released GDP figures for the 2016 second quarter by the National Bureau of Statistics while confirming a temporary decline, has (sic) also indicated an (sic) hopeful expectation in the country’s economic trajectory,” the State House said in a statement signed by Laolu Akande.

The administration attributed the negative results to the activities of oil vandals said other aspects of the economy were yielding intended results

Trump's policies is a 'huge threat' to Mexico - President Enrique

World News
U.S. Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and Mexico's President
Enrique Pena Nieto walk out after finishing a press conference at the Los Pinos
residence in Mexico City, Mexico, August 31, 2016
MEXICO - President Enrique Pena Nieto rebuked Donald Trump as a threat to his country just hours after painting a positive picture of talks the two held on Wednesday to try to defuse tensions over the U.S. presidential hopeful's anti-Mexican campaign rhetoric.

The Mexican president had on Wednesday afternoon hailed as "open and constructive" the impromptu meeting he held with Trump, who later referred to the Mexican leader as his friend and a "wonderful" president.

But in a late evening television interview, an angry-looking Pena Nieto sought to defend himself against a broad swathe of criticism for his decision to invite the Republican candidate despite his repeated verbal attacks on Mexico.

"His policy stances could represent a huge threat to Mexico, and I am not prepared to keep my arms crossed and do nothing," Pena Nieto said. "That risk, that threat, must be confronted. I told him that is not the way to build a mutually beneficial relationship for both nations."

Trump's quick acceptance of an invitation sent last Friday took Mexico's government by surprise, and his visit to Mexico City came just hours ahead of a keynote speech on immigration as he sought to close the gap on Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.

The real estate mogul's accusations that Mexico sends rapists and drug runners to the United States, and his threats to build a border wall and tear up trade deals, have angered the government but his meeting with Pena Nieto on Wednesday gave him a chance to present himself in a more moderate light.

He spoke of Mexican-Americans in glowing terms and stressed the areas of common interest between the two countries even as he stuck to his message that he would put up the wall.

Pena Nieto had likened Trump to dictators Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini earlier this year. But his government said Trump understood its concerns at the meeting, making Pena Nieto's tense appearance on television the more surprising.

"What we saw was a respectful attitude and discourse from Donald Trump," presidential spokesman Eduardo Sanchez had said earlier, arguing that progress was made on the issue of trade after prior threats by Trump to tear up the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

"I think there was an advance in general," he added.

Still, Trump laid out a series of tough policies to tackle illegal immigration when he delivered his speech in Phoenix, Arizona, on Wednesday night.

He told a cheering crowd that Mexico would pay for the wall "100 percent" and that if he wins the election anyone living illegally in the United States would be sent back to their home country and made to apply for re-entry.

That would include millions of Mexicans.

Opposition politicians in Mexico rounded on Pena Nieto for hosting Trump.

"Instead of making him apologize, the government allowed (Trump) to complete the humiliation of the Mexicans," Ricardo Anaya, leader of the center-right opposition National Action Party, said on Twitter.

FULANI HERDSMEN: President Buhari Behind the Killings in South-East, Says Group

Enugu Killings

SOUTH-EAST, NIGERIA - Piqued by the slaughter of 17 hapless natives of Enugu State in the past four months by rampaging Fulani herdsmen, the Civil Liberties Organization, CLO, yesterday, alleged that President Muhammad Buhari’s inaction on the killings suggests that he is behind the dastardly acts.

CLO said had a similar orgy befallen another country in Africa, Europe and other parts of the world, Buhari would have been the first to condemn the killings while he turns a blind eye on the endless killings of his fellow country men and women.

Continuing, CLO, also vowed to follow, inch-by-inch, the arrest last Monday, of one herdsman, Ibrahim Adamumale, 20, nabbed in Affa, Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State for allegedly being in possession of a sophisticated gun, an AK-47 rifle with 24 rounds of live ammunition.

CLO’s anger was against the backdrop of the arrest by operatives of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP’s Intelligence Response Team, IRT, on the alleged masterminds of April 25 Nimbo massacre of 13 natives, based on credible technical intelligence.

The suspects arrested in the Nimbo attack were: Mohammed Zurai, Ciroma Musa, Sale Adamu, Suleiman Laute, and Haruna Laute.

They lamented that the country has never been polarized along ethnic lines as it is now.

Member, CLO Board of Governors, Alhaji Danjuma Gambo said: ”We are wondering whether the president, who ran for office, four consecutive times never had an agenda for Nigeria.

With a little above one year in office, the country is now in a terrible mess where people can no longer sit down peacefully in their own ancestral homes.

“The development that a herdsman was arrested by Police last Monday is not the first. Exactly four months ago, the same Fulani herdsmen attacked Nimbo, killing about 13 persons. This is apart from burning of houses, raping of women and children and destruction of farmlands. The five suspects arrested in the Nimbo massacre made confessional statements to the killings in Nimbo. Will the investigation take eternity when the same police said the suspects have made confessional statements? The Inspector General of Police should account for the five suspects and tell us where they are four months after the investigation.

“Police in Enugu must tell us how the suspect got the sophisticated AK-47 rifle and also prosecute him to bring closure to these cases. Justice should be seen to be done. Buhari has never condemned herdsmen activities and his body language suggests that he sponsors their activities.”

Just In: In Every Igbo Man, There Is Biafra - MASSOB

Biafra Issue

SOUTH-EAST NIGERIA - Leader of Biafra Independence Movement/Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra, BIM/MASSOB, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike has assured the international community that a sovereign Biafran nation, when established, will uphold all the laws and conventions of the United Nations, UN.

Uwazuruike said that “having denounced our Nigerian nationality since November 1, 1999, our people do not want to continue to be part of Nigeria because it was as a result of this slavery, corruption, poverty, marginalization, inequality and instability that the civil war of 1967-1970 was fought.”

In a press statement signed on his behalf by the Biafra Director of Information, Mazi Chris Mocha, Uwazuruike contended that  it was not in the interest of Nigerians and the international community to have such a prolonged civil war in which over 2 million innocent lives were lost, adding that such war could have been avoided by granting self-rule to all the national units in Nigeria of which Biafra is one.

Restating his resolve to actualize Biafra as an independent nation, Uwazuruike maintained that  granting of Biafran independence from Nigeria is for the good of all the ethnic nationalities in the country.

“I am confident that Biafra can never be wished away, because in every Igbo man, there is Biafra”, Uwazuruike stated, adding, “If I will not get Biafra, I wouldn’t have come out to start talking about it in the first place and the non-violence method which I understudied for years in India would be defeated”.

He recalled that he had in November 1, 1999 internationalized the struggle and recalled that he applied to the United Nations secretary General, Mr. Koffi Anan then to among other things take a critical look at the fact that the people of Biafra, consisting of the five Igbo speaking states and with Large populations in Rivers, Delta and Cross river states and numbering about 40 million people humbly seek to be admitted, registered or in the alternative be treated as an unregistered nation in any of the organs of the world body.

BREAKING: Residents flee oil community to stay alive

Crisis in Ohaji-Egbema

SOUTH-EAST NIGERIA - The crisis in Assa community, in the Ohaji-Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State, is not abating as gunmen, suspected to be cult members, reportedly killed two persons on Monday.

This is coming after PUNCH Metro reported that nine persons were killed penultimate week in the area, including a father of three, Vitalis Uwalaka.

Our correspondent also reported that the crisis was caused by the crude oil deposit in the community.

Youths, who belonged to different cults, were said to have engaged in supremacy battle over royalties paid by multinational oil companies operating in the community.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the community was presently inhabited by elderly and sickly indigenes, while most residents had fled to neighbouring towns and villages.

A community leader, Celestine Ogbuji, told our correspondent that the security agencies were not doing enough to handle the situation.

He said, “Things are getting worse in our community. The cult killings have taken a new dimension since the past four months. They have been killing people, burning houses and raping women. There is no market in that place again.

“On Monday, two persons were killed. One is Mr. Ekero, but I don’t know the name of the other victim. For the past four months, at least 17 people have been killed.”

Ogbuji decried the attitude of the police, saying a team deployed in the area in March left after spending a few days.

He appealed to the government to deploy military men in the area.

Another indigene, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the community had been deserted.

“People have started leaving Assa community because of the killings. As I speak with you, I have moved to Ohuba town.

“It is unfortunate that the community that makes Imo an oil-producing state has been seriously torn by cult killings. And despite the oil, there is no infrastructure or any social amenity in the town except for few individual efforts,” he said.

A member of the Imo State House of Assembly, Emmanuel Orie, told our correspondent on the telephone that the Assembly had started an enquiry into the matter.

He said, “There is a crisis in that community. There have been a lot of killings, which is affecting the growth of the community. As a member of the state Assembly representing the area, I have moved a motion on the floor of the House. We will address the crisis.”

The state Commissioner of Police, Taiwo Lakanu, did not pick his calls and had yet to reply to a text message sent to his telephone line.

Breaking: Senate sacks President for budget padding

Brazil Politics
BRAZIL - Senate has voted in favour of permanently removing President Dilma Rousseff from her office, in an impeachment trial set to end 13 years of leftist rule in the country, Al Jazeera reports.

Sixty-one of 81 senators voted against Rousseff on Wednesday after a five-day trial and a lengthy overnight debate.

“Today is the day that 61 men, many of them charged and corrupt, threw 54 million Brazilian votes in the garbage,” Rousseff tweeted minutes after the decision.

In a separate vote senators decided not to ban Rousseff from seeking a public office for the next eight years.

Al Jazeera reported that Rousseff was watching the session from the presidential palace and would speak a couple of hours after the vote at a news conference.

She also said that the case was not expected to go any further as the charges were political, not criminal.

Allies of Rousseff have signalled that they would take the case to the Supreme Court. But several motions filed to the country’s highest court throughout the impeachment proceedings have failed.

Rousseff’s former vice-president turned rival Michel Temer, 75, was sworn in as president on Wednesday until the next scheduled election in late 2018.

Rousseff, from the leftist Workers’ Party, is accused of taking illegal state loans to patch budget holes in 2014, masking the country’s problems as it slid into its deepest recession in decades.

She told the Senate that she was innocent, saying the impeachment trial amounted to a right-wing coup d’etat.

Rousseff asserted that impeachment was the price she paid for refusing to quash a wide-ranging police investigation into the state oil company Petrobras, saying that corrupt politicians conspired to oust her to derail the investigation into billions in kickbacks at the oil giant.

She said it was “an irony of history” that she would be judged for crimes she did not commit, by people accused of serious crimes.

The Workers’ Party under Rousseff and her predecessor Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is credited with raising around 29 million Brazilians out of poverty.

But many now blame the party and Rousseff in particular for the country’s multiple ills.

Nigerian Apex bank lifts ban on suspended banks to forex market

Forex transaction

Nigeria Apex bank on Wednesday said it had readmitted to the foreign exchange market banks that were suspended last week for non-remittance of $2.12bn belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.

The banks are FirstBank of Nigeria ($469m); Diamond Bank ($287m); Sterling Bank ($269m); Skye Bank Plc ($221m); Fidelity Bank ($209m); Keystone Bank ($139m); First City Monument Bank Plc ($125m) and Heritage Bank ($85m).

The CBN had last week suspended nine banks from the forex market, including the United Bank for Africa ($530m), which was readmitted last week Wednesday after its remitted all the NNPC dollar funds in its custody to the TSA.

The Director, Banking Supervision, CBN, Mrs. Tokunbo Martins, announced the readmittance while speaking at a media briefing held at the headquarters of the bank in Abuja.

Martins stated that the decision was taken after the Body of Bank Chief Executive Officers, under the auspices of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, met with the Committee of Governors of the CBN.

She said during the meeting a presentation on the payment plan for all outstanding dollar deposits from the NNPC/NLNG in their possession to the TSA was made by the bank’s CEOs.

She said, “We just finished a meeting with the body of CEOs of the banking industry and Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria.

“You will recall that a while ago, a number of banks were suspended from participation in the foreign exchange market.  Since then, I have received some inquiries; we have had engagements with body of CEOs and they have been interacting among themselves.

“I’m happy to tell you that the banks that were hitherto banned; the ban has been lifted on the banks. And the reason is that all the banks after their engagement, under the auspices of the CEOs of banks and CIBN have submitted credible re-payment plan which we, the central bank, found acceptable.

“As a result of that, all those banks have been reinstated into foreign exchange market.”

Commenting further on the development, the Managing Director, Access Bank Plc, Mr. Herbert Wigwe, promised that the affected banks would comply fully with the new re-payment plan.

He said, “The body of banks CEOs under the auspices of CIBN has agreed to get back to work together to ensure that each time there is a serious issue like this, banks’ CEOs can meet to resolve it promptly and quickly.”

Speaking during the briefing, the President in Council, CIBN, Mr. Segun Ajibola, stated that the body of bank CEOs, in partnership with the CIBN, decided to seek the resolution of the situation in the interest of the Nigerian economy.

KEY VERSE: I tell you, although he will not get up and supply him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his shameless persistence and insistence he will get up and give him as much as he needs. - Luke 11:8, The Amplified Bible

If, as God tells us in 1 Timothy 2:4, it’s His will for all men to be saved, why aren’t we seeing more of the masses of lost people born again every day? Have you ever wondered that?

I have...and as I’ve sought the Lord about it, I’ve come to realize that, for the most part, it’s because those of us who are already saved don’t pray persistently for those who aren’t. Instead of persevering—staying before the Father, praying for them to receive the bread of salvation—like the man in Luke 11:8 did for his friend, when we don’t see immediate results, we simply give up and go home.

What we don’t realize is this: Perseverance is the key to success in intercession!

Why? It’s certainly not because you have to change God’s mind. He never changes. His mind’s made up. He wants all men saved. The reason you have to persevere in intercession is to put pressure on the demonic forces that are trying to keep God’s will from being accomplished. Those forces must be broken down through prayer so that strongholds are destroyed and spiritual blinders are removed from the spiritual eyes of the people you’re praying for.

You see, God will not go against the will of any person. But He will move through your intercession to reveal Himself to them. Through your persistent prayers, He will bring them to the knowledge of their need for Him. Then they’ll reach out for Him and spiritual rebirth can take place!

If you’re sitting around waiting on God to save Aunt Mary or Uncle Jim or your best friend...stop sitting around! Get busy interceding for them. Persevere in prayer. Pray the prayer in Ephesians 1:16-23 for them, refusing to give up until they’re safely inside God’s kingdom.

Jesus has already laid down His life so that they can be saved. The question is, will you?

Text: Deuteronomy 8:1-9

Key Verse: "All the commandments which I command thee this day shall ye observe to do, that ye may live, and multiply, and go in and possess the land which the LORD sware unto your fathers" (Deuteronomy 8:1).

In his novel, "Lord Of The Flies", William Golding wrote about man's tendency to wantonly trample on values meant to protect him. In this novel, young, innocent British boys were marooned on an island. They decided to set some rules for themselves to help them survive there till they are able to get help from the outside world. But before long, the rules were ignored, which led to chaos and the destruction of the island.

As the children of Israel got set to possess the land God promised them, they were admonished to keep all the words that He had commanded them. Obedience to this law was the key to their survival and sustenance. Apart from helping to ensure a social order that would guarantee economic prosperity, their personal and individual survival was also dependent on their keeping the law. They would be able to prolong their days and retain the favour of God in their lives.

The same applies to everyone today. The pains and agonies we experience would be unknown if everybody was subject and obedient to the laws and commandments of God. The Bible should not be seen as a mere religious book meant to stipulate or regulate religious worship, but also the surest foundation on which the society should be built. Societies that ignore the word of God and remove it from their social life set the stage for their total destruction.

To survive, we must not pay lip service to the word of God, but must allow it to regulate our lives in all its ramifications. Do you seek to live? Do you want to prolong your days? Do you intend to have a family, community or nation where there is real life, happiness, social and economic security and prosperity? Then the key is to keep to the commandments of the Lord. There is no other alternative to a mindful adherence to God's word.

Thought for the day: God's word is quick and powerful, sharper than any two-edged sword.

SCRIPTURE: So he asked Jesse, "Are these all the sons you have?" "There is still the youngest," Jesse answered, "but he is tending the sheep…" – 1 Samuel 16:11 (NIV).

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Nothing can be possible until someone decides to be responsible

Responsibility is the secret of possibility. Anywhere possibilities abound, responsibilities are being taken.

Some time ago, someone called me on phone from the United Kingdom and said, “Sir, I have been following your programs on the Dunamis television, and observed that your schedules could be very hectic”. He was right; my schedules are indeed very tight. There are people who think that luck brought us to where we are today in ministry, but that is not true.

If someone takes my position and experiences my schedule of work for a month and realizes that it takes hours to prepare different messages for the six services on Sundays, Healing Service on Tuesdays, the two midweek services, not to mention the time invested in writing books, organizing crusades and other Kingdom activities demanding my attention; he would know that it is not luck but work that is behind where we are today.

Beloved, nothing can be possible until someone decides to be responsible. Anywhere people are experiencing drastic possibilities in their lives; it is not luck that is at work but responsibility at work.

Remember this: Nothing can be possible until someone decides to be responsible

1.Ask God to show you what to do.
2.Wake up to the responsibility of taking practical actions for the fulfillment of your destiny.

O LORD, I ask for the grace to take responsibility in order to see possibilities in my life. Help me, LORD, to obey Your Word in order to be what You created me for, in Jesus’ Name.

Memorise: Abstain from all appearance of evil. – 1 Thessalonians 5:22

Read: Psalms 15:1-5 (KJV)

1 A Psalm of David. LORD, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill?

2 He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart.

3 He that backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbour, nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbour.

4 In whose eyes a vile person is contemned; but he honoureth them that fear the LORD. He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not.

5 He that putteth not out his money to usury, nor taketh reward against the innocent. He that doeth these things shall never be moved.

Bible in One Year: Jeremiah 10-12, Psalms 46

‘Looking unto Jesus’ are three very important words of salvation, encouragement and direction for daily Christian living. Nicodemus, in his search for the true God and eternal life, approached Jesus for possible understanding. The Lord Jesus made the new birth very plain by using an Old Testament illustration of the fiery serpents of brass put on a pole for the Israelite's to look upon as recorded in the book of Numbers 21:8-9.

The fall of Adam and Eve, and the temptation of Jesus Christ, exposes humanity to two important realities among many others. First of all, the devil is out to destroy all human beings without exception. Secondly, the devil cannot do a perfect Job at destroying a person without the consensual agreement of that individual. Consequently, the devil seeks the permission of an individual to have the access required to destroy his life. That is why the Bible in Ephesians 4:27, admonishes us not to give way to the devil.

Moreover, the devil does not make this request directly; neither does he require a clear answer from anyone. The language of the devil is always implied and shrouded in ambiguity, such that no one is ever fully aware of the implications of any transaction with the devil until reality dawns on them. For these reasons, children of God should be mindful of their responses to any proposal by the devil because ordinary interest is usually taken as consent or approval by the devil. Men and women who showed interest in various proposals of the devil in the past were soon captured and enslaved to the point of being addicted to such harmful practices like alcoholism, gambling, illicit sex, hard drugs, prostitution, etc. For these reasons, the Bible outlines several ways in which believers should respond to the devil. Evil is to be avoided at all cost as indicated in Psalms 1:1:

“Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.”

And in Proverbs 4:14:

“Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men.”

And 1 Thessalonians 5:22 says:

“Abstain from all appearance of evil.”

Evil is to be hated with passion and resisted with everything we have in line with Proverbs 1:10:

“My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.”

And James 4:7,

“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

Above all, children of God should pray every day in response to evil, Matthew 6:13 says;

“And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:”

I pray that you will not be a victim of evil in Jesus’ name.

Prayer Point: Father, please keep evil far away from me and my entire family in Jesus name.
