Your Risk Of 10 Types Of Cancer Dramatically Increases If You Are Overweight

Health issues

The average man would need to gain only about 25 pounds over what’s considered his normal weight to increase his cancer risk
Pack on the pounds and you might gain more than just a spare tire: Excess weight raises your cancer risk more than previously thought, new research suggests.

Prior studies have already linked higher weights to an increased risk of 5 types of cancer: colon, esophagus, kidney, breast, and uterine (the last two for women only.)

Now, after analyzing more than 1,000 studies that looked at excess weight and cancer risk, researchers from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) have added 8 more types of cancer to the list.

For men, excess weight—which the researchers defined as a body mass index (BMI) of above 25, meaning overweight or obese—raised the risk of developing 7 additional types of cancer: cancers of the stomach, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, brain, thyroid and bone marrow. (Women with extra pounds also faced one more risk—an increased chance of developing ovarian cancer.)

How much it spiked your risk depended on the cancer: For instance, people with the highest BMIs were 10 percent more likely to develop thyroid cancer and 80 percent more likely to get diagnosed with stomach cancer than those with normal BMIs.

The average man would need to gain only about 25 pounds over what’s considered his normal weight to increase his risk, says Graham Colditz, M.D., chair of the IARC Working Group.

That might be because obesity can cause changes to your metabolism and hormones in a way that causes chronic inflammation—and the evidence linking this to cancer is strong.

One important note: The researchers used BMI to measure excess fat, which isn’t a perfect tool.

BMI only takes into account height and weight. That means a guy with lots of muscle mass may be considered obese, even though his wouldn’t have much extra fat at all. (That’s Why Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson Is Officially Obese).

Still, in this case, where the researchers were analyzing over 1,000 previously-performed studies, grouping by BMI was the best, most consistent approach.

And it does tend to accurately identify the majority of those who actually have excess fat as overweight or obese, Dr. Colditz says.

So what’s your move if you’re carrying around extra pounds?

The good news is that reduction in weight, even by 5 percent, can begin to lower cancer risk, he says. (These 10 Ways to Lose Weight Without Even Trying can help.)

And if you’re currently at a healthy weight? Make it your business to stay that way.

“Avoiding more weight gain will certainly avoid further increase in risk of cancer,” he says. “The first approach should be to keep weight constant.”

Hillary Clinton is ‘totally bigoted’, says Donald Trump

World news

AMERICA - The tone of the US presidential campaign turned darker on Thursday, with Hillary Clinton skewering Donald Trump as a man who flirts with racism and paranoid ideas, while he in turn labelled her a racist whose family foundation was a “criminal enterprise.”

Speaking at a campaign event in Reno, Nevada, Clinton employed unusually tough language as she detailed a history of what she said were the Republican real estate mogul’s discriminatory actions.

He had been sued as a young developer for failing to rent to black and Latino tenants, and by black employees of his casinos, the Democratic presidential candidate said.

The Republican nominee’s recent choice of Steven Bannion, a firebrand conservative, as his new campaign chief showed Trump was embracing the extremist white nationalist stances of the so-called “alt-right” movement, she said.

“A man with a long history of racial discrimination who traffics in dark conspiracy theories drawn from the pages of supermarket tabloids and the far dark reaches of the internet should never run our government or command our military,” Clinton said.

Her speech came on a day when one poll showed her support reaching an important threshold — backing from just over half of all respondents. The survey by Quinnipiac University gave her a 51 to 41 percent lead over Trump in a head-to-head race.

-‘Totally bigoted’-

Trump has recently attempted to enlarge his tiny base of support among blacks — it has been as low as 1 percent — arguing that African Americans have “nothing to lose” by voting for him.

He met with a group of black and Latino supporters at his Trump Towers in New York early on Thursday.

Speaking in New Hampshire later, Trump lashed out at Clinton, saying she was accusing “the decent Americans who support this campaign, your campaign, of being racists, which we’re not.”

Calling it “a tired, disgusting argument,” he said it was Clinton who was being a “racist” by viewing minorities merely as a source of votes while doing nothing for them.

Trump doubled down later in an interview broadcast on CNN Thursday night, saying he personally thinks Clinton is “totally bigoted.”

When asked to elaborate on the allegation, he said Clinton’s policies “are bigoted because she knows they’re not going to work.”

– No path to legalization –

Trump also sought this week to moderate his earlier comments on immigration.

As president, he would focus on deporting the “bad” immigrants without uprooting the “good” ones, he said — a sharp shift from his early insistence that all undocumented immigrants be deported.

“You can’t take 11 million at one time and say boom, you’re gone,” Trump said on CNN.

But he repeated his pledge that there would be “no legalization” route for undocumented immigrants already in the United States, even those who have committed no crime.

“There’s no legalization and there’s no amnesty,” he said. “If somebody wants to go the legalization route, what they’ll do is go, leave the country, hopefully come back in, and then we can talk.”

He also promised again that he would build a wall on the southern border.

“We will have a strong border and we’ll have a tremendous wall, a wall that Mexico pays for,” Trump told CNN.

Responding to Trump’s immigration plan to step up deportation, the Clinton campaign said his extreme right-wing agenda “is fueling a dangerous movement of hatred across the country.”

– ‘Prejudice and paranoia’ –

Giving in to the persistent urging of party leaders, Trump has begun relying more on a TelePrompter, allowing for fewer troublesome off-the-cuff remarks.

That new discipline has enabled the Republican tycoon to concentrate his attacks on Clinton and his allegations that, as secretary of state, she trafficked in influence through the family’s Clinton Foundation.

Recently released emails showed that donors to the foundation had been given greater access to Clinton and her staff, he said.

“This week the curtain was truly lifted,” he said.” The corruption was revealed for all to see. The veil was pulled back on a vast criminal enterprise run out of the State Department by Hillary Clinton.”

Clinton, who has denied the influence charges, pressed the argument that Trump lacks the temperament to be president.

“Donald Trump has built his campaign on prejudice and paranoia,” she said. “He’s taking hate groups mainstream and helping a radical fringe take over the Republican Party.

“His disregard for the values that make our country great is profoundly dangerous.”

Entertainment: Tiwa Savage and Yemi Alade battles for Best Female Artiste

NIGERIA - The subtle supremacy question between top Nigerian female hip hop acts, Tiwa Savage and Yemi Alade, will get a verdict in November when the grand finale of this year’s All Africa Music Festival holds in Lagos.

Both singers have been nominated alongside other artistes in the Best Female Artiste, West Africa category, respectively for their songs, If I Start to Talk and Na Go De.

Many agree that Tiwa and Alade have, in recent years, been in the vanguard of female artistes that are reshaping the content of Nigerian music.

Although Savage broke into the limelight earlier, Alade later came in very forcefully and she does not seem to have dropped then.

Even where Tiwa may have an edge over her in terms of a piercing voice, Alade’s songs are usually very forceful, just as the energy she invests in performances and videos can be phenomenal.

When AFRIMA’s panel of judges eventually come up with their judegement on November 16, it will be interesting to see where the pendulum will swing.

But this may be an arbitrary observation as there are
other female musicians they are contesting with on the

Indeed, based on how some of them are fairing in their recent works, the game may just remain open as the jury would want to say.

Also nominated for the AFRIMA Best Female Artiste of the Year, West Africa are Aramide, with the song, I Don’t Care; Niniola, J’ete; Seyi Shay, Right Now; and Temi Doll Face, School Hour.

Nominated from Senegal is Adiouza, with the song, Daddy; while Josey is carrying the Ivoriene flag with her song,  Diplome.

The list for the Best Male Artiste, West Africa is also very interesting. Here Flavour and Wizkid are in competition with their songs Dance and Final Baba Nla respectively.

Brymo and Tekno are also in the race with In the City and Duro, while two Ghanaian stars, Okyeame and Sarkodie,  are shortlisted for their songs, Small Small and Hand to Mouth.

From Mali, Idikiba & co completes the list with Confiance.

Many other artistes have been nominated in other regions of the continent, while the organisers said nominations in other categories of the competition would soon be released.

Unveiling the nominees’ list, the African Union and the 13-man jury expressed excitement at the quantity and quality of the entries received.

According to the moderator of the adjudication process, Mr. Mike Strano, about 2,700 entries from African music professionals were received between of May 20, 2015 and July 30, 2016 when the submission lasted.

Describing the nomination process as careful and thorough, Strano harped on the Jury’s resolve to be fair and transparent.

He said, “The jury is very careful about being accurate right from the process of verifying eligibility of entries to the process collating and finalising results. It is an evolving process but one we work painstakingly at to ensure transparency and fairness.”

NIGERIA - Parents protesting the failure of the Federal Government to rescue over 200 schoolgirls abducted by the Boko Haram sect in Chibok in 2014 have asked President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately rescue  the girls from captivity or resign.

The parents, who joined the #BringBackOurGirls coalition on Thursday for another protest march to the Presidential Villa, were again stopped by armed policemen.

A representative of the parents, Rev. Enoch Mark, accused the Federal Government of not doing enough to rescue the girls, saying the government should negotiate for their release.

Mark, whose two daughters were among the 219 schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram, said he suffered a stroke while worrying about his daughters.

He insisted that Buhari must negotiate with Boko Haram for the release of the schoolgirls.

He said, “We cast our votes for Buhari because he promised to rescue our girls. Now, the parents are asking you, Mr. President, to meet the insurgents and make a decision.

“Either use the military force or go for negotiation; some countries are ready to give you a helping hand. What are you waiting for? Are you not interested in bringing back our girls?

“We have intelligence agencies in Nigeria; there is nothing in this country that they don’t know. Why didn’t you give them orders to bring back our girls?

“Are you not a General? You know what is happening and you know where our daughters are. Buhari, if you feel that you are incapable of rescuing the girls, step down now and give it (power) to someone else. We have many intelligent persons in the country who can handle this situation. You cannot tell us that you don’t know where the girls are.”

Mark, who uses a walking stick, accused the Federal Government of not communicating with the parents of the abducted girls.

He cited the Malaysian government’s handling of the Malaysian MH370 air crash, noting that the government regularly communicated with the families of the crash victims during the incident.

“For two months now, I have not been able to sleep; I had stroke while thinking of my two daughters. General Buhari, had your daughters been among these girls, how will you feel? How will you feel with your daughter in enemies’ hands? You are responsible for the rescue of these girls. You are responsible for my daughters’ safety.

“When the Malaysian plane crashed, the Malaysian government was in touch with the families of the victims, but you are not talking to Chibok girls’ parents,” he added.

The aggrieved father said Buhari did not empathise with the Chibok parents when they visited him at the Presidential Villa in January.

“You intimidated us; you said you were frustrated, you were not happy with us. Are we not Nigerians? If Buhari feels he does not know (the girls’ location), let him step down and hand over to someone else,” Mark added.

The Co-convener, BBOG,  Oby Ezekwesili, who read a statement on behalf of the group, said the members would march to the Presidential Villa again in 72 hours if there was no positive response from the Federal Government.

The group noted the attack on Shawa Village in the Askira Uba Local Government Area of Borno State and acknowledged the courage and gallantry of the soldiers in the frontlines, including  the Multinational Joint Task Force and the Civilian JTF, and urged them to remain resilient in the face of attacks.

The BBOG called for an investigation into the handling of salaries and emoluments of troops, saying complaints about their poor feeding and allowances were unacceptable.

It challenged the government to demonstrate the political will to rescue the girls by taking a definite action on the issue.

It said, “Reports from a former Head of State, Yakubu Gowon, after a meeting with Mr. President suggest that the Federal Government’s position remains a lack of credible intelligence.

“Coming over seven months since our engagement with Mr. President on January 14, and considering the lack of feedback on rescue efforts, this strengthens the position that there has been no focused, coherent and consistent operation to rescue our girls.

“Having submitted four cogent reasons why it could not be said that there is a lack of credible intelligence during our meeting in January, and three further reasons just three days ago, the discussion must shift from credible intelligence to political will to decide on a line of action.”

The BBOG said the claim by the military that it had fatally injured Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, made it the fourth time that the security forces had announced that they had killed the terrorist.

Also, the Chibok community, in a statement by its spokesman, Dr Manasseh Allen, reiterated its calls for negotiation with Boko Haram for the release of the girls.

It said the escape of one of the girls, Amina Ali, in May 2016 had bridged the gap of absence of intelligence and called on the government and its agencies to live up to their duties.

Meanwhile, the United Kingdom pledged to do whatever it could to assist in finding the girls.

The UK High Commissioner to Nigeria, Paul Arkwright, said this when the BBOG members met with him in Abuja.

He said, “UK stands in solidarity with the Chibok people; the girls are global citizens; so, we will do whatever we can to partner the Nigerian government to help find the girls.”

Attempts to speak with the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, proved abortive as his phone rang out.

He had yet to reply to a text message sent to his mobile phone as of press time.

‘Buhari has not given up on Chibok girls’

The Presidency on Thursday said the Federal Government has not given up on the Chibok girls.

It said Buhari’s heart was with the girls and their parents.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said this in an interview with one of our correspondents.

He said efforts to find the abducted girls would continue.

The presidential spokesman said, “The President’s heart is with the Chibok girls and their parents. He understands their feelings.

“The government has not given up on the missing girls. Efforts to find them will continue.

“So far, the country’s gallant and re-energised military has taken back more than 20,000 citizens held hostage by the terrorists.

“In the last couple of days, the Nigerian Air Force carried out a successful raid in which 300 terrorists were killed. The leader of the terrorists, Shekau, was injured.

“Boko Haram, which killed above 20,000 citizens is on the retreat. Government’s efforts to end terrorism and brigandage all over the country will continue.”

Minister hacked to death by striking workers

BOLIVIA - Miners on Thursday during a clash with the police in the town of Panduro hacked the Deputy Interior Minister to death.

Interior Minister, Carlos Romero, confirmed on Friday that reports by witnesses indicated that the 55-year-old was beaten to death following clashes between police and miners in the town of Panduro, 165 kilometres south-east of La Paz.

Romero said Illanes had been kidnapped by miners after attempting to initiate talks with them at a roadblock.

The minister, who spoke of a “cowardly and brutal” murder, added that his aide was also injured and was taken to hospital.

He said that one miner was reportedly also killed in the Thursday’s clashes, bringing the death toll in several days of protests against controversial trade union legislation to three.

He said, “Two miners were killed on Wednesday.

“Around 100 miners were detained after Thursday’s protests.”

Miners currently represented by independently organized cooperatives have been using street blockades to protest against a law allowing them to join trade unions.

The national federation of mining cooperatives representing some 10,000 miners rejects any trade union influence on Bolivia’s mining sector.

Breaking: Nigerian Presidency attacks Emir of Kano over comments

ABUJA - The Presidency on Thursday said President Muhammadu Buhari would not fight the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Mohammadu Sanusi, over his Wednesday’s criticism of the present administration.

Sanusi had said the Buhari-led administration might end up like the immediate past President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration if it failed to retrace its steps on some policies.

The traditional ruler, who was the chairman of the 15th meeting of the Joint Planning Board and National Council on Development Planning in Kano State, had argued that the failure of the Buhari-led government to create employment opportunities for “the over 80 million youths in the country,” made terrorism attractive to the unemployed.

But in an interview with our correspondent on Thursday, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said criticism such as the one made by the first-class traditional ruler was healthy for democracy.

Rather than fighting the Emir, Shehu said Buhari’s government would listen and act on the criticism.

The presidential spokesman said, “This government will not fight people for criticising the present administration led by President Buhari.  This kind of criticism is healthy for our democracy.  One cannot get better without being criticised. I can assure you that this government is listening.”

Meanwhile, Buhari on Thursday met behind closed doors with the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, in what was believed to be a fallout of Sanusi’s criticism of Buhari.

A Presidency source told our correspondent that the CBN would respond appropriately to Sanusi’s comment.

He said the CBN boss could have used the opportunity of the meeting with the President to get approval to reply Sanusi.

The monarch, who titled his speech, “Nigeria in search of new growth model,” had said some policies of the government were bad for the economy, adding that Buhari must retrace his steps.

He noted that there were times when the Federal Government tried to get it right, adding that it failed to follow up, which contributed to the ongoing economic downturn.

He said, ‘‘I will neither change nor be political by telling people what they want to hear. The truth is that there is nothing we are facing today that we did not know would happen. We made mistakes, many of them deliberate; we ignored every single warning.

“If you take a brand-new car and hand it over to a driver who doesn’t have a licence to drive it and you are involved in an accident, you can’t say you are surprised, unless you are some kind of an idiot.

“We should not just keep blaming the previous administration; we also made some mistakes in the current administration.

“They must retrace their steps. They have to retrace those steps all the way. We should not fall into the same trap we fell the last time when the government was always right. The bottom line is that if your policy is wrong, it means you must change it and nothing will make it right as it has to be changed.

“If this government continues to behave the way the last government behaved, it will end up where Jonathan ended.”

Nigerian Senate Angry At Siasia’s Boys For Collecting Money From Japanese, To Probe Dalung

Sports news
The Senate Committee on Sports has said that it disapproves of the Dream Team’s acceptance to collect monetary rewards from Japanese surgeon, Katsuya Takasu. The Chairman of the committee, Obinna Ogba, speaking about the money, which appears to be the only reward the team will get for its bronze medal finish, said the team should have steered clear of the reward. He said the source of the money was unknown and should not have been taken.

“I don’t think it was nice for our country to accept such money given the happenings around the world now.

“Money is good but it’s not every money that comes your way that you collect. So, I associate myself fully with the President of the Nigeria Football Federation,” he noted.

Ogba also said the Senate will probe Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung and the National Olympic Committee over the country’s disastrous outing at the Games. He said funding and logistics had contributed to the unimpressive showing of Team Nigeria at the Olympics.

“My committee intends to invite the NOC to come and brief us on the Olympics.

“Apart from the late arrival of our athletes’ kits, you can see even our national anthem at the opening ceremony was the wrong one.

“So, all these, we are going to find out what happened when we resume,” Ogba said.

Shocking!!! Schoolgirl drugged and raped on her 10th birthday was chopped up and burned in bathtub 'by own family'

- This is the most gruesome act of evil I have ever seen... a complete disregard of human life and betrayal by a mother

A schoolgirl's dismembered body was discovered in a burning bathtub after she was allegedly drugged and raped on her 10th birthday, it's reported.

Victoria Martens was injected with methamphetamine, sexually assaulted, strangled and stabbed before her remains were partially wrapped in a blanket and set on fire, police said.

Experienced detectives described the killing as the "most gruesome act of evil" they have ever seen.

The girl's 35-year-old mother Michele Martens, her boyfriend Fabian Gonzales, 31, and his cousin Jessica Kelley, also 31, were all arrested on Wednesday night.

Officers were called to a disturbance at Arroyo Villas Apartment Complex in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where they saw a cloud of smoke wafting from the bathroom, the Albuquerque Journal reports.

Inside they were met with the horrifying scene as the youngster lay reportedly burning in the bathtub, while parts of her body were found in a plastic bag in a laundry hamper and the bedroom floor was stained with blood.

Martens and Gonzales, who had been dating for around a month after meeting online, face multiple charges including child abuse resulting in great bodily harm.

Kelley had reportedly been allowed to stay at Martens home after she was released from prison four days earlier.

A police report alleges that Martens admits Gonzales and Kelley gave the girl methamphetamine “to calm her down so they could have sex with her.”

Breaking News: Car Bomb Attack Kills 8 Police; 45 Wounded

ANKARA, Turkey — Kurdish militants on Friday attacked a police checkpoint in southeast Turkey with an explosives-laden truck, killing at least eight police officers and wounding 45 other people, the state-run news agency reported.

The attack struck the checkpoint some 50 meters (yards) from a main police station near the town of Cizre, in the mainly-Kurdish Sirnak province that borders Syria, the Anadolu Agency reported.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack which was the latest in a string of bombings that have targeted police or military vehicles and installations. Authorities have blamed the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, for those attacks.

Television footage showed black smoke rising from the mangled truck. The three-story police station was gutted from the powerful explosion.

At least two of the wounded were in critical condition, an official said. The Health Ministry said it had sent 12 ambulances and two helicopters to the site.

Violence between the PKK and the security forces resumed last year, after a fragile two-year peace process between the government and militant group collapsed. Hundreds of security force members have been killed since.

Turkey has also seen a rise of deadly attacks that have been blamed on Islamic State militants, including a suicide bombing at a Kurdish wedding in southeast Turkey last week that killed 54 people and an attack on Istanbul's main airport in June, which killed 44.

Turkey sent tanks across the Syrian border this week to help Syrian rebels retake a key IS-held town.

Since hostilities with the PKK resumed last summer, more than 600 Turkish security personnel and thousands of PKK militants have been killed, according to the Anadolu Agency. Human rights groups say hundreds of civilians have also been killed.

The PKK is considered a terror organization by Turkey and its allies.

The attacks on police come as the country is still reeling from a violent coup attempt on July 15 that killed at least 270 people. The government has blamed the failed coup on the supporters of U.S.-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen and has embarked on a sweeping crackdown on his followers.

Shocking News!!! Another Group Breaks Out of Biafra and Vows to expose IPOB Sponsors

Barely a week when the first group breakaway from Biafra and vowed to burn biafran flag, third faction of separatist group, the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Reformed Indigenous People of Biafra; RE-IPOB, has emerged. Recall that the crises rocking IPOB took a new twist days ago, following an announcement by a splinter group, the Rebranded Indigenous People of Biafra, TRIPOB, renouncing the Biafran group.

However, the third faction on Thursday, said it has sacked Kanu and the other splinter group, which has Chima Philip Effiong Osuji, as its spokesman, saying both group had no right to represent the Biafra interest. RE-IPOB also threatened to expose the sponsors of both IPOB and TRIPOB. Urging Igbos to remain peaceful, the latest faction claimed that Kanu has lost touch with realities of Biafra while TRIPOB has “nothing to offer” as splinter group of IPOB.

In a statement by its spokesman, Ikemba Biafra, RE-IPOB said, “Both IPOB and TRIPOB have been sacked; they should no longer speak for the Biafran people.

“They are the same outfit and have nothing to offer Biafra. We warn that if Nnamdi Kanu , IPOB and the so-called TRIPOB continue their antics , RE-IPOB will be forced to make public the sponsors of the two groups.

“RE-IPOB will not accede to the burning of the Biafran flag as the sacked TRIPOB planned. The Biafran flag is sacred to Biafrans.”

News-Update: John Kerry Warns Nigerian Military on Human Rights Abuse

Nigerian News

Secretary of State John Kerry issued a carefully worded warning on Tuesday to Nigeria’s military against committing human rights abuses as it goes about battling the Islamist militant group Boko Haram.

Nigeria’s military has long been dogged by evidence that it has killed civilians, tortured prisoners and, more recently, detained mothers, children and other victims who had been kidnapped by Boko Haram.

“It is understandable in the wake of terrorist activity, some people are tempted to crackdown on everyone and anyone who could theoretically pose some sort of a threat,” Mr. Kerry told a group of religious leaders and politicians during a visit to Nigeria on Tuesday. “I caution against that today. Extremism cannot be defeated through repression.”

Worries about human rights abuses have in the past undercut Nigerian efforts to buy American weapons they say they need to defeat Boko Haram. Besides abuses tied to its fight against Boko Haram, activists have accused the military of gunning down at least 300 members of a Shiite Muslim sect in the northern city of Zaria without justification.

Relations between Nigeria and the United States have grown warmer under President Muhammadu Buhari, who was elected last year. American surveillance drones based in Cameroon now fly missions over parts of Nigeria where Boko Haram is active.

Mr. Kerry dedicated much of his speech to urging Nigeria to employ and educate young people so they do not join groups like Boko Haram. Mr. Kerry decried Boko Haram’s “nihilistic view of the world.”

“They actually teach girls how to hold a bomb under their armpits so that the explosives remain steady,” Mr. Kerry said. “We might as well ask how anyone could be brainwashed into such atrocities, but because the children are so young and because the abuse that they suffer is so great, even brave souls can be broken.”

Mr. Kerry’s comments came as the Nigerian military said on Tuesday that airstrikes had killed and wounded several top Boko Haram commanders in the Sambisa Forest in the country’s northeast, where militants have been hiding for months.

Among the wounded was Abubakar Shekau, who took the helm of the group after the death of its founder in 2009, according to Col. Sani Usman, a military spokesman. The military’s attack took place on Friday.

At least three other top commanders were killed in “the most unprecedented and spectacular air raid,” the military said in a news release.

The military has claimed to have killed Mr. Shekau before. Leaders of the militant group are thought to be hiding deep in the forest. Reports of deaths or injuries to commanders were impossible to confirm independently.

Breaking: Chelsea Player's Father blast President Buhari

Rio Olympic 2016

Mikel Obi’s father, Michael Obi, has stated his dissatisfaction at how the Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government treated the Dream Team VI after their bronze-winning exploits at the Rio 2016 Olympics. He said he had expected his son and others members of the team to be accorded a presidential reception on arrival in the country. He said it was painful that the boys had to leave for their various clubs from the Olympics.

“I was surprised to read that there are no plans to receive the team. It is very unfair, especially after the team won the only medal at the Games,”  the Chelsea midfielder’s father told Punch.

“The least they had expected was a hero’s  welcome and a presidential handshake to appreciate their superlative performance, especially when nobody had expected that they would go far  at the Games.
“I had expected Mikel to lead the team back to Nigeria, accorded a befitting reception, before going  back to their various clubs.

“This is want an appreciate sports authorities and the Federal Government would have done.

“We are all aware of the shoddy preparations for the Games and how they were stranded in another country before they got to the venue, a few hours to the start of their first game against Japan. Despite this, they struggled to make the country proud and if this is all they could get for their efforts, I think it’s very unfortunate,” he said.

Nigeria defeated Honduras in the bronze medal match to win the country’s only medal at the just concluded Olympics.

Zimbabwean churches demand Mugabe impeachment

African News

Zimbabwe - Churches have called for the impeachment of 92-year-old President Robert Mugabe over his misrule that has resulted in the economic collapse that has left the country exposed to civil unrest.

The coalition of churches, which include Zimbabwe Divine Destiny, Zimbabwe Christian Alliance, Christian Voice, Zimbabwe Pastors’ Fellowship and Prayer Network Zimbabwe, said it would protest in the capital Harare on Thursday.

In a statement, the coalition said it would demand that Mugabe’s government be held accountable for failing to deal with the unfolding economic crisis. The churches would also protest against the abuse of state security apparatus, abductions, vote rigging and illegal arrest of citizens.

After the demonstration, church members plan to petition parliament to impeach Mugabe.

Bishop Ancelimo Magaya, speaking on behalf of the churches, demanded Mugabe’s government acknowledged Zimbabwe was in a dire situation that required “an extraordinary collective response”.

“Failure of which, the church demands parliament to move a motion of impeachment of the president over failed governance and subsequently set up a transitional authority to handle the crises and carry the nation through until the next election,” said Magaya.

Mugabe, a Catholic, has previously quashed criticism from church leaders.

Last month, Mugabe, who has been in power for more than 36 years, lambasted popular pastor Evan Mawarire as a false preacher sponsored by foreign countries bent on destabilising Zimbabwe.

Earlier this year, on July 6, Zimbabweans heeded the “national stay away” called for by Mawarire who used his social media #ThisFlag campaign to mobilise citizens. Mawarire has since fled Zimbabwe.

The nonagenarian Mugabe has also previously called retired Roman Catholic Archbishop of Bulawayo Pius Ncube a half-wit and a liar.

Mugabe has previously also vowed to cut church leaders’ “political tentacles” because of their criticism of his government.

On Friday opposition parties will protest in Harare to demand electoral reforms and solutions to the worsening economic and political problems in the Southern African country.

Breaking: Christians Attacks US Secretary Kerry Over Selective Visit To Sultan

John Kerry Visits Nigeria

Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has reacted bitterly to the visit by US Secretary of State John Kerry to the Sultan of Sokoto, Abubakar Saad, calling it discriminatory.

Rev. Dr. Supo Ayokunle, president of CAN, was reported to have vented his displeasure to journalist

Ayokunle said ignoring the Christian body, Kerry and his home government do not respect Nigeria’s diversity.

“Why did he meet with 19 states governors, without southern governors, is Nigeria the north alone, why did you go to the north alone?,” Ayokunle was quoted in the statement as saying.

“There’s a siege on Christians. Kerry’s actions speak volume, his body language was very divisive.

“If US Secretary of States is coming for official visit, it’s understandable, but we demand explanation why he was selective. Has the Sultan Palace become another State House? Was Kerry invited by the Sultan?

“We have 36 States in Nigeria; he only selected northern governors to meet with them. It was a visit to the north, not to Nigeria. It was surely a very divisive visit”.

The clergyman added: “With the visit to the north, Kerry’s visit has heightened fear and tension among Christians in Nigeria, if they cannot bring us together, they should not interfere in our affairs”.

Breaking: Life sentence for man who raped, impregnated stepdaughter

Crime, rape

Her stepfather admitted having sex with her on several occasions, but claimed she had initiated it.

South Africa - A full bench of the North Gauteng High Court has confirmed the life sentence of a 55-year-old Nigel man, who for years raped and assaulted his stepdaughter, sent her out to beg on the streets and impregnated her when she was 15.

The man appealed against his conviction on four charges of raping his stepdaughter, starting when she was 10, and ending when she fell pregnant with his child at the age of 15, and a charge of assault, as well as his life sentence.

His stepdaughter testified that she remembered him touching her indecently at the age of three and he later started regularly raping her at least twice a week, often while her mother and brother were asleep in the same room. She did not tell anyone about the rapes because she was afraid of her stepfather, who threatened that she would be chased away.

The family was dependent on her mother’s disability grant. She and her brother were forced to beg in the streets on the pretense that they were collecting money for a children’s home and her stepfather continuously swore at and degraded them.

When she finally had the courage to stand up to him and refused him sex after falling pregnant, he started assaulting her, pushing her around and throwing her against a couch. When she could no longer tolerate the circumstances, she finally phoned her aunt, who insisted on laying a complaint with the police.

Her stepfather admitted having sex with her on several occasions, but claimed she had initiated it. Judge John Murphy said there was most likely a conspiracy of silence and the young girl kept quiet due to insecurity, lack of care, love and warmth in her home and her fear that she would be left to her own devices in the streets.

The judges confirmed the man’s conviction, saying his version was rife with contradictions and it was clear he was evasive, manipulating and untruthful. Judge Murphy said it was clear that the victim had suffered emotionally and had to leave school because of her pregnancy. There was nothing to be said in favour of her stepfather, who showed no remorse, he added.

SCRIPTURE: And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpillar, and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you.  – Joel 2:25.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Pressing into God is the key to the restoration of everything that is lost in your life.

It has been confirmed from our anchor scripture that our God is a God of restoration. We serve the God who is a specialist in the restoration of things; He is a specialist in bringing back something hitherto lost to its former owner, place or condition.

Throughout scriptures, cases of restoration abound. For instance, the restoration of the wine that got exhausted during the wedding at Cana in Galilee (John 2:1-10), the restoration of the missing axe head (2 Kings 6:5-6), the restoration of the missing donkeys of Kish, Saul’s father (1 Samuel 9:20), the healing of Naaman’s leprosy (2 Kings 5:14) and the bringing back to life of the Shunamite woman’s child (2 Kings 4:18).

God is still in the business of restoring things; He is ready to restore anything that is lost in your life.

Anything that is lost or missing can be recovered as long as God is involved.
Therefore, pressing into God (in prayer, worship, praise and study of the Word) is the key to the restoration of everything that is lost in your life.

I prophesy the restoration of every lost item in your life today in Jesus’ Name.

Remember this: Pressing into God is the key to the restoration of everything that is lost in your life.

1. Believe in the God of restoration
2. Press into God and ask Him for the restoration of anything that is lost in your life.

PRAYER: O LORD, Help me to believe in Your power of restoration. I ask for the restoration of anything that is lost in my life, in Jesus’ Name.
