It follows the recent killing of a black man by police in the city, which sparked protests.

Another witness said she saw a gunman wearing a black mask and military-style clothing.

The condition of one of the injured officers taken to hospital has been des cribed as critical.

Misreading Others - Pastor W.F Kumuyi

Daily Manna Devotional written by Pastor Kumuyi

Sunday, 17 July2016
Topic: Misreading Others
Text: Job 4:12-21

Key Verse: "Shall mortal man be more just than God? shall a man be more pure than his maker?" (Job 4:17).

It is a common thing for people to misread the actions or experiences of others. Oftentimes, this happens when we have developed a fixed idea of a person or people. At other times, we may be so blindfolded by our personal experiences or background that we cannot accommodate other perspectives in life. But one of the most painful experiences is to be misjudged by another person, more so when it involves a person you trust and whose opinions you respect.

Imagine how Job must have felt when his trusted friends who visited him during his travail completely misunderstood him and charged him with sin. At such a time, Job needed loving and comforting company to keep his spirit up. On the contrary, his friends that responded took turn to lecture him on how such experience could not happen to a person unless he was a sinner. While resigning to God's will about his losses and distress, Job expressed his anguish and confusion of mind. To this, Eliphaz, one of Job's friends responded and reproved him for perceived impatience and discontent.

He drew much from a personal vision he had so as to convince Job of mortal man's feebleness and despicable state in comparison to God's purity and infinite sense of justice. He did not expect Job to continue to lay claim to innocence and implying that God was punishing him unjustly. Eliphaz's logic was right but, in the context in which it was said, it amounted to misreading his innocent friend who was undergoing a severe physical and emotional torture. In much the same way, we often react to people in ways that worsen their situations because we do not take time to empathise with them or, at least, read them in their contexts. We should strive to be more sensitive in our dealings with others.

Thought for the day: Misunderstandings often start with misunderstanding the other person.

Bible Reading in one Year: 1 Chronicles 21-24

Separated Unto the Lord - Pastor E.A Adeboye

Open Heavens Daily Devotional 17th July 2016

Sunday, 17 July 2016
Topic: Separated unto the Lord

Memorise: Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect. –Matthew 5:48

Read: Genesis 17:1-7 (KJV)

1 And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.

2 And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly.

3 And Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying,

4 As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations.

5 Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.

6 And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee.

7 And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee.

Bible in One Year: 2 Corinthians 1:1-5:11, Psalms 12

God Almighty does not hide His feelings about how we must relate with Him; He wants us to be totally His. The Bible says:“Thou shalt have no other gods before me.”(Exodus 20:3). There should be nothing standing between us and our God neither should there be anything taking His place in our lives. The only way we can convince Him of the fact that we are totally His is when we are completely separated unto Him; when nothing/no one else can lay claim on our lives.

In our Bible reading for today, God asked Abraham to walk before Him and be perfect. In other words, God was telling His friend, Abraham that He needed more of his devotion, commitment and consecration. This is what God demands from all men, particularly His children. To be separated unto the Lord is to be separated from this world of sin. The Bible says:

“1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” -Romans 12:1-2

This should be a very pleasant development for those who have suffered from the tyrant Lucifer. The entanglement with this world is enslaving and deadly but the unfortunate thing about this is that the victim may not realise it. Worldliness is a subtle taskmaster that must be avoided by all children of God. The “twin-sisters” whose names are godliness and contentment are the answers to the challenge of worldliness that brings serious entanglement upon children of God. Our Lord Jesus Christ said:

“No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” -Matthew 6:24

We must separate ourselves from material things of this world if we will please our God. The Bible says:

“9 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. 10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.” - 1 Timothy 6:9-10

Therefore, it is not profitable for us to allow this to take our lives away from our Maker. Let us acknowledge the primacy of the original Royalty, the God of the Heavens and the Earth. May our services be acceptable to Him from today in Jesus’ name.

Action Point: Determine to be separated unto your God afresh today.

No US involvement in a failed military coup in Turkey - John Kerry

US denies involvement in the failed coup

The US has warned Turkey against "public insinuations" of American involvement in a failed military coup, saying such claims are "utterly false and harmful" to their relations.

US Secretary of State John Kerry was speaking after Turkey's labour minister suggested the US was behind the coup.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called on the US to extradite US-based Turkish cleric Fethullah Gulen.

Mr Erdogan has accused him of being behind the plot, which Mr Gulen denies.

Mr Gulen told reporters from his home in Pennsylvania that he had been away from Turkey for more than 15 years and "I don't even know who my followers [in the country] are".

The attempted coup began on Friday night when a faction of the military took over key bridges in Istanbul and attacked parliament buildings in Ankara.

The government says 161 civilians and 104 "plotters" were killed in ensuing clashes, and more than 1,440 injured.

Nearly 3,000 soldiers have been detained and some 2,700 judges were sacked on Saturday as the government sought to re-assert its power.

Must Read!!! Why you must eat 'ofada' rice- Dieticians

The health value of eating 'ofada' rice

Two dieticians on Saturday in Lagos advised Nigerians to eat more of ‘ofada’ rice than polished rice because of its immense health benefits.

They told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in separate interviews that ofada rice reduces cholesterol and also very good for people with diabetes.

NAN reports that ‘ofada’ rice is local rice produced in Nigeria; it is short and has brown stripes; it is cultivated without chemicals, and mostly planted in some parts of the country.

Mr Olusola Malomo, a dietician, who works at Massey Hospital in Lagos, said that ofada rice contains some vitamins, which has been polished and parboiled in processed rice.

“Ofada rice contains vitamins B6 and B12 which has been washed with chemicals in processed rice.

“It was also found that ofada rice contains more phosphorous and fibre, which help in the reduction of the risk of bowel disorder and fight constipation.

“Ofada rice has been linked to protection against atherosclerosis, ischemic stroke, diabetes, insulin resistance, obesity, and premature death,’’ he said.

Malomo also hinted that the local rice has additional nutrients and phytochemicals that reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

“This local rice when eaten regularly can also reduce risk of life threatening diseases.

“It also provides essential nutrients such as vitamin B, phosphorous, selenium, manganese, potassium, and magnesium.

“Selenium reduces the likelihood of colon cancer, magnesium keeps the bone healthy, it also contains insoluble fibre which help reduces risk of gall stones, and help maintains normal body weight.

“Although we have been preaching about the health benefits of this local rice for years, we will still continue to inform people of its immense health benefit,’’ he said.

Another dietician, Mr Olu Cole, who works at Rains Hospital in Lagos said that ofada rice has more health benefits to human.

“This rice has cholesterol-lowering effects include polyunsaturated fatty acids and important dietary sources of water-soluble, fat-soluble, and insoluble antioxidants.

“Many people did not know that the unpolished rice has more health benefits than the polished rice.

“Although it is very expensive in our local markets but we still urge people to try and eat this rice.

“Eating this rice will ward off diseases in our system, if we say that it is expensive, when we fall sick, we will still use our money to buy expensive drugs.

“Cole said that people should imbibe the culture of eating the rice so as live healthier,’’ he said.

Both dieticians, however, urged government at all levels to help local farmers with funds so as to boost local rice production.

Australia offers a free trade deal with Britain following European Union exit

Free trade deal with Britain
Australia has called for a free trade deal with Britain following its exit from the European Union.

Theresa May described the move as "very encouraging" and insisted it showed Brexit can work for Britain.

In a phone call to the new PM, her Australian counterpart Malcolm Turnbull said he urgently wanted to open up trading between the two countries.

Liam Fox, the new international trade secretary, said he was already "scoping about a dozen free trade deals".

But Britain cannot sign any deals while it is still an EU member.

Mrs May said: "I have been very clear that this government will make a success of our exit from the European Union.

"One of the ways we will do this is by embracing the opportunities to strike free trade deals with our partners across the globe. It is very encouraging that one of our closest international partners is already seeking to establish just such a deal."

"This shows that we can make Brexit work for Britain," she added.

MEND endorses Niger Delta Dialogue Group

Niger Delta crisis

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) was contacted on Friday, July 15, 2016 by Dr. Godknows Boladei Igali, the immediate past Permanent Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Power, a diplomat and former Secretary to the Bayelsa State Government.

Dr. Igali contacted MEND as an emissary of HRH King Alfred Diette-Spiff, the Amanyanabo of Twon-Brass in Bayelsa state and leader of the Niger Delta Dialogue and Contact Group (NDDCG).

The subject matter of the discourse centred around the forthcoming dialogue with the Federal Government on the resolution of the current Niger Delta crisis and the imperative for the entire Niger Delta region to unite and speak with a single voice under the single umbrella of the MEND Aaron Team 2 dialogue and peace initiative led by Mr. Odein Ajumogobia, SAN.

MEND have carefully considered and approved the NDDCG proposal to join the Aaron Team.

Consequently, all aggrieved minor militant groups, all those so-called Niger Delta activists, elders, effete tribal assemblies, sycophants and parasites amongst others, who have suddenly found their voice after 6 years of a criminal conspiracy of silence during the neglect and misrule of former President Goodluck Jonathan; and who are now clamouring for recognition, relevance and inclusion in the ongoing Niger Delta peace process should contact and channel their grievances and demands through the NDDCG which will act as their representative.
